trying to add a WMS layer to MapStore

I'm wanting to connect to a WMS server, and I've tested the server in QGIS and it does in fact consume the data:

http://geo.pacioos.hawaii.edu/geoserver/PACIOOS/wms 

but, when I try to add it in the Catalog, I get the error:

Service not available.  Please, check the provided URL

I've tested it with other WMS services, and even added a ? after the wms (wms?), but I always get the same error.  Any thoughts on how to consume a WMS from the outside world?

I suggest you check better for possible networking issues. Do you have something reported in the browser console log?

Thanks for the prompt reply and advice. Is this how you entered your Catalog connection:

the error that I see in the Console is:

for further information, I used the version downloaded in the Quick Start guide, and I am able to connect to all the demo sources and grab tables, etc. 

Is the Quick Start .bat version missing any functionality?

as a quick follow up, I created a new WMS connection, but simply reused the wms layer you guys have in the demo:

https://gs-stable.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/wms 

that worked without any problems.  I don't know if there is something in the MapStore demo that allows the webpage to pass through the firewall or something.  Or if I need to add something else to the string for the Hawaii wms:

http://geo.pacioos.hawaii.edu/geoserver/PACIOOS/wms  

I've tried wms?request=GetCapabilities, and I've even tried it with https to no avail.  It is odd that the geo-solutions-it site loads just fine, but the Hawaii site does not.

(FYI: the ultimate end game in all of this is to try and connect to other wms sites that I create either using ArcServer or Manifold Server, so I simply want to succeed in grabbing a WMS site from outside of the demo versions you guys provided.)

thank you for your reply.  I had already attempted to use the https, but got the same error.  The console states:

I don't want to hijack this group discussion, so I'm sorry to reply back with the difficulties I've encountered.  For whatever reason, I can read your example site: 

https://gs-stable.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/wms 

but for some reason, the hawaii site returns the above error.   So, it's not like all websites don't work.  Your WMS, WMST, and CSW sites all connect really well.  So, it's puzzling that you can reach the hawaii site, but I can't.  Yet, I can reach the geo-solutions.it site.  

I'm working off the .bat file included in the binary package - and, I've even deleted it and reinstalled it from scratch (as Administrator).  I don't know if that has some kind of hard coded limitation.  I don't know what the  ${datadir.location}/proxy.properties cannot be found means, and if there is something in the configuration on my site is causing the problem.

Hi,

I tested the minary (version 2024.01.00 ) and I found an issue.

Probably is the same you have found. It seems to affect only the binary.

I reported it here:

You can check if the issue is the same (by opening your browser's developer tooks, click on network area and then clicking on the failing request in red that appears as well as you try to save the catalog.

Please let us know if it is the same issue and the binary version you are using, so we can add this information to the ticket

so it looks to be consistent with my findings. It affects only the binary (because it involves the java and tomcat versions included in it), not the other distribution.

For instance installing mapstore.war in a tomcat of your own, following the guidelines, will work.

As a follow up, I downloaded a previous version of MapStore from 2023, and it works.  I can bring in the Geoserver WMS layers we have referenced in this thread. So, something between 2023 and this new binary was introduced to create the issue.  

As an aside, does this require a WMS served up by Geoserver, or should any WMS work.  So far, my attempts to connect to another WMS server does not work.  

And finally, I had inadvertently sent a question to Lorenzo, and he suggested I post it here to get more feedback from users.  The gist of the question was:

it is nice to be able to bring in a layer as a geojson into the web app.  What would it take to allow the Catalog to access the loaded up geojson to include its data table into a dashboard.  This would be really cool, and would enable anyone with MapStore to simply load a geojson and quickly rip out a dashboard or story map without the need for Geoserver.   It would simply mean taking a layer in QGIS, exporting it to a geojson, and then in MapStore bring in the geojson to create a story map or dashboard.

I wonder if anyone else here might be interested in this kind of capability.

Yes, exactly.

A java libraries update caused the issue.

About the GeoJSON, you can already import the geojson as a vector layer (As you can do with shape files, with the import tool in the map) and it will be already available for maps or stories. 

As I said, we can not use local vector data (as geojson directly imported in mapstore) for catalogs or dashboards yet. 

As someone will be able to fund the development of it or to contribute a feature like it, we will be happy to include it.

Thanks for the confirmation. As for the Geoserver question: can a WMS served by Mapserver, Esri, or Manifold be used in a catalog?  I haven’t been able to get it to work.

As for a private discussion,

It looks like the capabilities document you provided contains only one CRS and this makes this issue to happen:

Waiting for the issue to be fixed, you can try to add one CRS to the capabilities. This should workaround the problem, also to confirm that this is the only issue with the service provided.

<CRS>EPSG:3857</CRS>

MapStore handles only the case when they are more than one. 

I already sent a fix for this, but this will be available in next versions.

If you can add one CRS to your capabilities document like

<CRS>EPSG:3857</CRS>

<CRS>EPSG:4326</CRS>

It should work. Please let us know, I did a unit test in my fix that made this particular issue to be skipped, but I'd like to have a confirm from you that you don't have any other issue.

Hi everyone,

Lorenzo is referring to a private discussion we had because I was using an IP address on a personal device and it wasn't terribly secure.  So, to spin everyone up so that they can give this a shot, here is the issue in a nutshell:

I'm using Manifold Server to server WMS images.  I found a url from Manifold using their test example:

https://manifold.net/ims9/wms

this WMS can be read in QGIS, so I'm fairly confident that the WMS specifications are sufficient enough to be read:

as Lorenzo states, there is only one CRS shown in the Manifold capabilities:  

https://manifold.net/ims9/wms?SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.3.0&REQUEST=GetCapabilities

So, I think there may be two things to explore:

1.  Manifold may very likely be creating a result that is not ideal.  So, it would be good if we could articulate something to them regarding how to format their WMS.

2.  Something has to be done from the MapStore end of things.  Lorenzo indicates above that a bug report is being issued and there may be a solution in the next release. But, he also indicated that there is something we can do in the meantime.  In this case, I have no control over what Manifold is doing, so I don't know if there is something I can tweak on the MapStore side of things to be able to read a Manifold Server WMS page.  

If others could give that url a try and report what they find, or any workarounds, I'll be sure to pass it along to others.
