Adding Features to Existing Widgets

Looking for some guidance as to how I would go about adding features to widgets. More specifically for the map widget but the knowledge in general as to how the widgets work is greatly appreciated. I want to know how would I edit the existing widget for the map? Does each widget have an entry point if so what should I look for? When looking inside of the plug ins folder theres a ton of files relating to the map theres alot outside of the plug in folder so its difficult to trace it down. If there isnt an entry point what would be the best course of action to understanding the code behind the map widget? Ive been using inspect element but it hasnt been super helpful.
