OK, let's see what works and what doesn't:

Boldface?

boldface{What about this?}

i{italic?}

Looks like Google Groups does not support formatting.

At least links can be posted straightforwardly (if a bit clunkily) by
typing the word "hyperlink" followed by curly brackets containig your
URL.

Maybe we don't really need the word hyperlink. Let's see.
http://www.ibm.com

Ha! That's great. I was sure I had tried that the other night, but I
must simply have been out of my mind. Or--I know. I think I neglected
to preface with 'http...'

I assume you just used curly brackets without the tag?

No brackets:

http://www.monster.com

Brackets:

{http://www.monster.com}

Oh, obviously no brackets are needed. Excellent!

Alright, let's see what happens if I edit the subject of this post.
Will it stay here, or will it migrate into the thread list?

Aha, it stays here. So it appears we can have subthreads.

If things get too un-navigable, I guess I'll have to copy subthreads
into new threads as needed.
