Just came back from NYC. The train yesterday evening was a disaster!
Some hoardes of steeplechasers covered in mud dirtied all of the
trains...

They put their feet ON THE SEATS! Duh! "I"m covered in mud...I think
I'll put my feet up on the seats so they'll be filthy for everyone
else who comes on the train." F'ing jerks!

I don't know what this steeplechase business was but I think it SUCKS!
And the fools involved with it are no better.

This morning the trains were mopped up, but there were still bits of
mud around. You can expect to have something on the back of your
clothes on the commute tomorrow. I'm pissed thinking that the extra
cost of having to clean all that up...my transit fares at work!

I feel like an idiot asking this, but what are steeplechasers?

Okay, I looked up "steeplechasers" and discovered:

Noun 1. steeplechase - a footrace of usually 3000 meters over a closed
track with hurdles and a water jump
