Dear all,

We have a new member among us, Albert from Urban Launchpad (more information here) who informed that he's helping create the First Bus Map of Dhaka. I would like to draw his attention to this post and request him to introduce himself elaborately, and tell us all more about the work he is/will be doing for Bangladesh. Thank you.

Dear everyone,

Thanks so much for your great work.  My name is Albert and I am
a recent grad from MIT in city planning.  While I was there I have
been working on some research on sustainable transport with our
professor at MIT and some former BUET professors and did some
experiments with mapping buses in particular in Dhaka last January
and through a partnership with a local team there, were able to collect
a lot of data in a relatively short amount of time, mostly through the help
of smartphones.  The experiment went well enough that we are working
to scale the project up to cover the entire bus network of Dhaka and
wanted to work with your team on how to incorporate all the great work
that you've already done.  We are keenly aware that the best thing we
can do is to start the work and find great partners to continue building on
it.

We will be in Dhaka on Jan 13-15 and hoping to meet you in person to
learn more about your efforts.

All the best,
Albert on behalf of the team of the Urban Launchpad

PS Before school, I worked at Google with the Google maps team and was
excited to see that you used MapMaker in one of your recent data
collection efforts.

Hi all,
Glad to know about Albert.
I think,we can get the bus route of Bangladesh from BRTC.
Can we try to get from them?

Hello Albert,
Glad to see you here. I hope mapping Bangladesh will be interested in
this work, however, I personally very intetested in this project. But
one thing that can make this very easy, we can get all bus plan, route
& network from individual bus companies and also BRTC can help...

Keep in touch. Hope to meet you when you come Dhaka.

That would be great to get the routes so that we can make sure we
cover the entire system with rides and see what actually happens in
practice.  We are collecting data not just on the routes but also the
travel times and doing some on-board surveys as well to see who
rides them, etc.

Really looking forward to meeting you,
Albert

Dear Albert,

Welcome to mapping Bangladesh forum. It seems you are trying to provide a much needed solution for Dhaka city through your initiative of Dhaka Bus Map. I understand from your mail that you will be visiting Dhaka for only 3 days during which time you expressed your interest to meet us in person. To make your meeting fruitful you may need to engage with some of the forum members before you decide who to meet here. I'll provide a brief on our forum:

We are volunteer citizen cartographers contributing from all corners of Bangladesh. Mapping Bangladesh is an online forum with no physical existence. We use our local knowledge to add/ edit features. A few of the members have achieved some degree of expertise based on large number of successful edits/reviews and are able to review, validate and publish edits made by general mappers. These expert mappers are given additional power of approval and are called Regional Expert Reviewers (RER) or Power Mappers. You can find a list of such contributors here.

Also, most of us do not have a background in cartography, which is not a prerequisite for Google Map Maker (GMM). As far as I know, one of our member, Hedayet, is a GIS expert.  However, as contributors to Google Maps through GMM, we are able to add features, like bus stations, roads etc. and can expedite the publishing process provided we have appropriate resource in hand. Recently, we have added/ updated all the Upazila (sub-district) Health complexes, District boundaries, Upazila boundaries using available kml data files.

Please let us know what kind of assistance you are seeking from this forum.

Thanks,
Zaman

To incorporate Bus route data of Dhaka within mapmaker, Google Transit is the best option. Google Transit (GT) is a feature of Google Maps(GM) that adds bus routes to the driving directions available on the maps. The system requires a "feed file" that describes the routes and scheduling. When a user searches for direction in Google Maps, data from such files (if any) is shown in maps. This is an Example.

Any public transportation agency/company that operates with fixed schedules and routes can participate in the Google transit program which is simple and free. Visit this page for details.

In Dhaka, BRTA is one such authority suitable for this. Ideally, if we can get BRTA to participate, it would be great. However, if BRTA does not show interest in this, we mappers can assume the role of an agency which, I think, was done in Kolkata of India. In Kolkata, apart from official authorities, user made data was used and a Wikipedia page was shown as the official website of the agency! RERs can contact google  for more guideline.

So we have to prepare an xml feed file containing the Bus route information of Dhaka and host it. The file can be made through online collaboration of mappers. There is already a list of main Bus routes which I have attached with this message. This can help us prepare the feed file. There are tools to prepare such files.

Please give your opinion regarding this approach.

Hi Albert!

Most welcome to the Mapping BD forum! I'm not sure what did you mean by "BUS route". Is it road network or BUS station/Stop database?

Google Map Maker works with a combination of satellight imagery and local knowledge. Field knowledge of GIS is not necessary/applied here. If you've some GIS data about dhaka city you can provide us so that we can manage a way to add it on Google Map. We encourage mappers to collect GPS data via Google's "MY Track" apps available for android. This app is capable to mark placemar (i.e. Bus stop) k as well as entite route with speed details . Please elaborate your proposal so that we get a better perception about it.

With Thanks-
Tanzil.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for not responding sooner and reading your great tips -
I have just landed in Dhaka a few days ago and will be here
for another week, mostly in our office near New Market.
Would be great to meet anyone who is available - we are inventorying
and tracing as many routes as we can in Dhaka and loading
them in the fusion table below:

Our plan is to make this data available in paper form as most people
do not have access to digital devices, although a link to our early
working digital version is here:

Would be great to know what you think both good and bad -

Dear Albert,

Thanks for email. I see that you and your team are doing a great job.
Since most of us at Mapping Bangladesh are involved in mapping/ updating the
maps of Bangladesh, we welcome this initiative very much.

A few of our active members, including myself, live in Dhaka. Please feel free to
let us know the kind of cooperation we can offer based on our experience and
expertise. Also, let us know the convenient timing and place to have a meeting
with a few of us.

Thanks,
