Hi! I'm sorry if I posting in the wrong forum but search doesn't give any results.
I've a question about POI icon. In particular about feature "Gymnasium". According to Wikipedia Gymnasium "is a type of school providing secondary education in some parts of Europe, comparable to English grammar schools or sixth form colleges and U.S. college preparatory high schools". But in the MapMaker Icon for this Category is something related to sport actions. One of active mapper in our region (Kazakhstan) sometimes changes category of Schools-Gymnasiums from the "Gymnasium" to "School". But in the official name of feature "Gymnasium" word exist.
Can somebody explain why "Gymnasium" category is marked with such kind of icon (sport-type)?
Thanks!

+1.

I look forward to this one's answer, too. I put my Gymnasiums as
Schools, for lack of option.

i was surprised to find this post, as in my place gymnasium is a place where you work out (exercise). then i checked the free dictionary. apparently in europe gymnasium also means school but in rest of the world it is a place of sports!

Hi, see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnasium_(school) for
detailed coverage.

E.g. in German, a "Gymnasium" is always a school, never a sports
place. The English "gymnasium" is primarily the sports place, and
needs to be translated with care in German (and other languages).
So on one hand it's a matter of translation, on the other hand school
systems are not always comparable, and it may be difficult to find an
adequate translation.

There's a category "school" and a secondary category "high school",
maybe this could be used to indicate the type of school (e.g. primary,
high, college,...), including country-specific school types.

However, I think it's correct if a gymnasium in the English GMM user
interface is a sports place, as long as it's labeled correctly in
other languages and vice versa.

Hi All,
@vitaly - This issue was brought to our attention a few months back.
We then came to a consensus that marking such features under school
category and naming it as Gymnasium would be a reasonable solution for
this. So, ideally the active mapper of your region is following the
right course of action and we vouch for him.

Also, I see that you have posted this on Issue Tracker as well. But
wouldn't it be better to have a separate category for
'Gymnasium(school)' instead of changing the icon of the current
category? What are your views?

In the interim, I'd urge you to mark such features under school
category and naming those as "Gymnasium".

I hope you understand.

Thanks,
