Updating “Sub-Locality / Neighborhood” Category

Hello Mappers,

Addition of Grama Niladari Divisions (GND Boundaries) to Google map commenced few days before in GMM Sri Lanka; the category is “Sub-Locality / Neighborhood” as GNDs are the minor administrative divisions in Sri Lanka.

Further GNDs are added to the map each Divisional secretariat wise and following DS Divisions have completed already.

• ·         Biyagama DSD
  

Following DS Divisions are in progress

• ·         Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte DSD
  
• ·         Panadura DSD
  
• ·         Kelaniya DSD
  
• ·         Kurunegala DSD
  
• ·         Gampaha DSD
  
• ·         Maharagama DSD
  
• ·         Hanwella DSD
  
• ·         Kesbewa DSD
  

This project is in progress with help of following mappers: - RERs, Saman, Sampath and Kapila

I like to participate.But I have a question.In some rural areas a GND covers several villages.Some of them have main post offices with post codes.So in that case what we must do?Still map the GND as a Sub Locality/Neighborhood or as a village?

Hi Sameera Nandasiri.

Thanks for your interest in this project.....

First step is to add/edit GND's as Sub-Locality and the next is about City boundaries. 

Small villages/housing schemes under a GND are Minor Civil Division, also a part of our project.

Yes a GND Should be marked as Sub-Locality Only.

We really appreciate the support given by RERs & mappers, however special thank goes to Sampath, Saman, Kapila for their marvelous contribution in illustration of these Sub-Locality Boundaries. It is indeed a team effort and a great achievement as a community.

Gampaha, Kalutara, Kurunegala and Galle Districts are also now in progress. We need more volunteers as we have left with another 24 Districts in order to complete entire Sri Lanka.

Hi Gihan.....

Thanks for joining us and helping to the Sri Lanka Map Maker Community.

Here is the step by step guidelines to adding a GND on Gmap of your area of interest. 

1. Click in GMM (use Map view)window right side on Overlays >>> Manage overlays. 

    Now paste the copied link (See in The end of mail) to Add an overlay window in KML field. Click on  Add   button, Click on  OK   button.

    You can see the GND outline on the map now.

2. Full zoom anywhere on the line anywhere. (Choose a corner to start drawing)

3. Move on  Add New  >>> click on the last Add Natural Features and political boundaries in the drop down menu.

    Select Category Sub Locality / Neighborhood.

4. Start drawing on the red line by clicking on every angle ( Blue line should be on the overlay line. Do not miss any angle/narrow turn), 

    When you reach the last point (it is your starting point)  just double click on it. The feature highlights now.

5. Add the Name of GND, It should be in this format ( You can get official names from LIFe Location Code Navigator)

    Language: English  Name: Only in English  Type: Primary & Official 

    If you wish to add the same name in Sinhala/Tamil, It should be in this format

    Language: Sinhala  Name: Only in Sinhala  Type: Local

    Language: Tamil  Name: Only in Tamil  Type: Local

    Recheck all details and points before you save it

6. Click on  Save  Button on top of left panel.

This feature is added now. If it is in pending, please send us a link....

After trying many times I write to you. Every time I finish the polygon it gives me a message: Failed to create feature. Internal Error : Bad Data (Bad Feature). Please report this error with a link to this page.

I thought I was doing some thing wrong so I discarded all and tried many times. But now I have to report it to you.

Yes lets try another one. I am concerned because I tried several times on several days and I got the same error. So.... I couldn't be making the same mistake over and over again?! At what point does the name come in? I didn't see that.
