Hello Sri Lankan Mappers,

As we continue to fix incorrect map data in Sri Lanka, we are proud to see you all working together to improve maps in this region and appreciate your valuable input.

Some time back, Sri Lankan mappers had requested us to update the road priorities of Sri Lanka, which otherwise seemed to be inconsistent in some areas. Based on this request, we have done an analysis and came up with suggestions on Priority Changes to improve the overall data quality for roads. These priority changes will improve the driving directions and display on maps. We plan to start this exercise in Sri Lanka, very similar to what we did in Romania a few months back(Here’s the related post for Romania).

Observations and Proposed Solutions:
  • Roads in Sri Lanka are broadly modeled as - AA, AB, AC and B routes. These roads are currently marked with priorities like- National, Regional, Major and Minor artery. These are not appropriately marked in some cases.

  • While assigning road priorities, there are 3-4 main factors to be considered:
    • Route Names [ Specially highway names like A, AB, B and more]
    • Distance and condition of a route [ Like deadend, through road with major connectivity and so on ].
    • Inter-connectivity of priorities [A high priority segment cannot end with a low priority road, with exception to coastal areas and country boundaries].
    • Other priority guidelines are available on the Map Maker Help Center to help you map them.

Priorities fixing table:   Please note that the guidelines given below may not stand accurate for all cases but should hold good for most instances.

Current Priorities

Observations

Proposed Priorities Links

Southern Expressway

Expressway

Major part of the road is under constructions at this time.

            -

AA
(National highways)

A0, A1 ,A19 are marked with National highway priority

“A” routes are mostly with added with priority National highway. But some of these can be actually marked as Regional Highways based on the road attributes  (such as length, built, access, speed etc.)
Also, routes without the numbered highway (AA) name can be marked as National/Regional Highway priority. The stretch of road between Dr. Danister de Silva Mawatha to Edmonton Road - Link currently is marked as a Major arterial but given the road length and other attributes its better to mark it as a National Highway.

National Highway/ Regional Highway / Major Artery(very rare)

AB

AB3, AB32 are marked with Regional highway priority

“AB”  that are all marked as Regional highways can be marked with priority Regional highway and Major Artery / Minor Artery owing to interconnecting priorities and lengths (Some AB roads are as low as 0.06 kms and as large as 72 kms).

Regional Highway/ Major Artery/ Minor Artery

AC

AC13 is marked as Minor artery priority.

“AC” routes have some inconsistencies in the priority which needs to be corrected. All these roads are typically in the range of 3-4 kms and the width of the road with low speed limits compared to other highways. Hence these can be marked with priority Minor Artery/Local.
Example  AC27 - This road is currently marked with priority  Major arterial but can be marked as Minor artery -Link

Major Artery(very rare)/ Minor Artery/Local road

B

B269 are marked with Regional highway and other highway priorities.

“B” roads can be of priority Major/Minor artery and Local roads depending on the road attributes like length, width, connectivity and speed.
Example 1- B357 - Regional Highway Priority is correct Link
Example 2 - B158 is of Regional Highway priority, but certain segments with duplicate route names needs to be corrected and changed to a priority of either  Minor Artery (or) Local - Link

Regional Highway/Major Artery/Minor Artery /Local Road

You know your country best, and we welcome feedback and appreciate your help as we fix these priorities.
Please reply to this thread, if you come across cases that you’d like to discuss changes to the priorities suggested.

As always, thank for you continuing to build the most comprehensive world map!

Hello Moid

Sri Lankan Roads (except Local & Terminal Roads) have currently marked based on the Sri Lanka Road Development Authority (http://www.rda.gov.lk/source/rda_roads.htm) Road classification and not merely based on distances as you mentioned hear. We consider this as the National Road classification kindly explain how it impacts if the Navigation activates in Sri Lanka.

I think we need more clear clarification about this change and setting other Road attributes as well, because recent changes done by some GRs are almost confusing.

HI Moid,

Thanks for your keen interest on Sri Lankan road network.

First of all i am in full agreement with Dihan confirming that the road classification in Sri Lanka is under the responsibility of Sri Lanka Road Development Authority.(RDA) the sole governing body of National Highways in Sri Lanka.

Hence, we are not suppose to change the criteria followed by RDA and just need to adopt the roads classified as per the Gazette Notifications.

Thanks
Eng. Jayah
