Hi all,

I was having a really bad experience with Map Maker due to its performance lately. And I decided to write to RER guide just for a thought and he has directed my mail to relevant people and also asked me to post in the regional forum.

The thing is, Map Maker is really slow in Firefox. It is irritating to use it with stuttering. Every time I pick a it freezes for few seconds. Toggling labels in satellite view is a pain due to this unresponsiveness. And this dramatically increase the time that it takes to do edits and reviewing. It is quite fast in the Google Chrome, but unfortunately chrome crashed once but recovered. The second time Google Chrome crashed, whole PC crashed. So I gave up chrome and returned to Firefox.

I think that most of the performance problems are after the recent upgrades to the map maker. The older one was fast on my computer. It had less eye candy, but it could get the things done.

The Google Chrome crashed only on my desktop PC which is a Pentium D 925  CPU based system with 2GB memory and a GTX550Ti GPU. However, map maker is quite usable on my laptop with some tweaks to firefox. And the laptop is a Pentium Dual Core T4200 2.0GHz based one with 3GB of memory shared with onboard Intel 4500MHD graphics.

So, what I want to know is if anyone of you are having or have had any performance issues with Google Map Maker. Please be kind enough to share your ideas. :)

Thanks.

Hello Harindra,

I use Google Chrome, I feel it is fastest out of all other browsers caz it's works fine for me, Also kindly check the current Internet speed of yours (http://www.speedtest.net) sometimes it may become slower with the expansion of their Client's Base.

Thanks for the reply. Google Map Maker is certainly fast in the Google Chrome browser. But my browser of choice is Firefox with some extensions and extra tweaking and customization of the UI. Chrome does not offer much on that front.
However when working in systems with a little old CPUs, the CPU gets loaded to the max and whole system gets unstable. This is one of the main reasons for my reduced activity in the Google Map Maker as my home computer is a Pentium D and I do not expect to upgrade very soon. I do not like to work on the laptop due to less screen real state and low quality. So I prefer my 22inch LCD over this crappy laptop LCD.

What I have at home is an SLT 512kbps internet connection which should be more than enough for GMM in download speed. But if you check the upload speed while using the GMM, it saturates the whole upload bandwidth rendering the connection useless if GMM is active. However, the issue I am talking about is not certainly related to the internet speeds but the performance of the computer.

The reason for my complaining is the heavy computing resource usage of GMM. What I think is that the users should be given the freedom of choice to switch to a lighter version of GMM with basic functionality without all the eye candy which most of the times are irritating.

For an instance, when I am in satellite view say that I need to turn of labels, for that I am having to mouse over to the menu on the right of the GMM and wait a little bit for it to expand, click on labels, wait for the menu to collapse and finally for the labels to disappear and begin working. The whole process sometimes takes about 20 seconds, which is a lot for issuing simple command.

I also having some issues with recent versions of GMM. The overall performance is very bad and it takes some time to load menus etc. I also agree that there should be a light version, else we might fed-up with this.

Another way to overcome the performance problems in the Map Maker could be overcome by switching to Linux. I should say that it is very fast in Linux. No lag at all.

Hi,

I think the problem is current GMM is consuming lot of resources. It needs powerful machine and a high speed internet connection.
GMM works without any problem in my iMac (27 inch  resolution 2560 x 1440 / 3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 / 4GB memory / AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1GB ) but in my laptop ( Core 2 Duo 2 GHz / 4GB Memory / Intel Graphics ) it sucks. In both machines I'm using Chrome. Chrome is faster than any other browser even in Mac OS. I've tried windows 7 on Mac. OSX is the fastest one I have used. Can't compare with Linux, because I have tried it only in live CD.

Thanks.

I have same problem every time.... I use Firefox for same reasons.
I have Core 2 Duo E7500, 2.93GHz, 2 GB Ram,
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
ADSL 1 mb speed

I have found that if I restart the Fire fox, the problem is solved for a few minutes, but this is not a solution.

Any idea to use Fire Fox with speed while mapping ????

One way is to increase a little performance is to do a little modification in Firefox. For that follow the following procedure,

1) Type about:config  in URL bar and press enter
2) Enter the configuration settings with confirming the warning
3) Search for browser.sessionstore.interval
4)Modify the value to a something higher rather than the default 15000

This reduces some of the occasional freezing.

Quad Core i5 is a beast compared to my Pentium D in the desktop PC. :D
I am gonna probably have to throw the CPU and motherboard and buy new parts. Probably next year, when the Intel Haswell CPUs come out.

Hi, Harindra

I really appreciate your notification regarding the GMM update. I too have been notifying in General Map Maker since long time informing GMM team regarding the Grey Patches at every zoom level in Sri Lanka.

However this has been rectified at last somewhere in the middle of April 2012 with a new GMM update.

As you exactly pointed out Fire Fox performance is not good compared with Google Chrome.

However, more than the OS the internet speed matters alot. I am using a speed of 10mbps. Hence, i dont have much problem in Fire Fox and it works perfect. But when keep working for sometimes the file is getting a bit heavy. Then i used to refresh the OS.

Let us request the GMM to rectify this common issue with next GMM update.

Thanks
Eng Jayah

I am using firefox 12. I have adblock
plus,flashgot,noscript,stratiform,lastpass and xmarks plugins
installed. i tried using GMM in firefox safe mode but it did not make
much difference.

Hi Amith

Thanks for your kind attention on this issue.
Firefox works in speed for mapmaker, but after a few minutes its get slow and then very slow.
I have change many config entries but the problem is still there. Restarts Firefox helps for a few time only.
Any Suggestion????

I think this is an issue with firefox not with mapmaker. Firefox's memory usage becomes very high after some time.

Hi Sarfraz,

I had the same problem of yours. In the begining Fire Fox is very fast and after some edits it is becoming very slow until we restart the GMM or clear the cache memory.

That is why i have been working with Google Chrome all these days.

We are investigating on the recent slowness in the product, specially in Firefox. We will update once we fix it.
However, for turning on/off labels on the Map, you can use "T" as shortcut key to toggle between available map views.

The performance of GMM on linux is amazing. I just ran a sunspider benchmark in Firefox10 and Chrome 19 on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. Now it is only the Internet connection which bottlenecks the performance.

Firefox did the test in 347ms. However those are rough measurements. Still, GMM seems to like Google Chrome more.

I had feature adding issues in Firefox. So I'm switching to Chrome as well for mapmaker. But I cant stand the Chrome's lack of RSS feeds. The workarounds suck as well. I'm too used to Firefox for day-to-day browsing.

I'm using Chrome for Google Map Maker, on my laptop chrome can take about 5GB  of memory  uneder Windows 7. I close the browser and all is working fast.  Has anybody idea to tuning the webbrowser?

I too noticed a certain issues in performance recently. Loads longer and Sometimes comes to a halt with that loading icon turning forever;specially once an edit is done. So having to reload the whole thing. I guess my not so fast Internet connection has something to do with it. Certainly not something pleasant. It'll be great if there was a lighter version or,, an app?

@chris 5GB is waay to far, May be you are having many many tabs with really heavy content.
