Hi everyone! I recently stumbled across www.whatwasthere.com, a fun company based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The WhatWasThere project lets users upload historical photographs, tagged with location and year, using the Google Maps API. The idea is to create a photographic map of world history. They're just getting started, but I thought it might be of interest to some of you avid mappers.

If curious, you can see where users have already posted photographs. They are cropping up all over the world! Is your region photo-mapped?

Arlete,

That's a beautiful photograph. Way to jump right in!

It will be awesome if others continue to share their posts on WhatWasThere. We can get a sneak peak of your region's history!

Lori
As soon as you upload some photos to WhatWasThere send us the links so
we can visit your place virtually.
I have been playing with Photosynth as well and produced a 360
panorama in front of my department at the university:

Try out Historypin, too! Google has collaborated with the site, which has just expanded to mobile and global availability!
