It's almost a month since the massive earthquake in Haiti, but the
data has not imported in Google Map (and direction finding doest not
work in Map Maker)!
Could someone kindly explain whether our map making helped a bit in
the past month or not?
Some REAL use cases definitely improves mappers' motivation and
results in better mapping for the next time.
Thank you,
Ali
Thanks to you and the "Map your World" community -- the data
contributions for Haiti were of great value and used by a wide range
of disaster-relief organizations!
Map Maker data have been used by hundreds of organizations/individuals
around the world, truly amazing! Please find below some concrete
examples of this:
** Post disaster assessment.
** Creation of maps about the population affected by the earthquake.
** Relief efforts, humanitarian logistics, and long-term recovery
planning.
** Assessment of landslides caused by the Haiti earthquake.
** Data was used for University-level lectures and hands-on exercises
pertaining to the recent earthquake and current crisis in Haiti.
** UNOSAT used MM data for creating most of its mapping products:

And please find here a nice quote from UNOSAT:
" The support from Map Maker to UNOSAT, the Operational Satellite
Applications Programme of UNITAR, has provided significant benefits to
the humanitarian community. The satellite image analyses and maps
UNOSAT provides during natural disasters and conflicts now routinely
include MapMaker data. This collaboration has greatly increased the
usability of maps as the areas in focus are frequently over places
where little information on village names and road networks exist from
traditional geographic databases and outdated maps. This is where the
unprecedented level of detail and coverage in MapMaker data,
especially in developing countries, make all the difference. In
addition, detailed satellite imagery provided rapidly in MapMaker has
shown to be of high value and its use is now an integral part of
UNOSAT's procedures to assist the humanitarian community. A wide range
of users now benefit from UNOSAT's use of MapMaker, including search
and rescue teams, field coordinators, desk officers at headquarters
and even donor agencies."
Ali, you can see that your mapping contribution has had tremendous
impact and has played a major role in supporting the relief efforts in
Haiti – thank you so much!
If you are interested in learning more and supporting more directly
these activities please let us know. We will continue keeping the
"Map your World' Community informed of the impact and outcomes of the
Map Maker data.
Many thanks again!
France
Thanks,
Ali
