Good morning !

Concerning your first link to Vila Maranhão, São Luís, Maranhão:

I have visited http://maps.google.com.br/maps?rlz=1C1CHNU_enBR341BR341&q=vila+maranhao,+maranhao,+brazil&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Vila+Maranh%C3%A3o,+S%C3%A3o+Lu%C3%ADs+-+MA&gl=br&ei=NF8YTcKaLoS8lQeP7aTSCw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBkQ8gEwAA
There is only a marker indicating Vila Maranhão. I would like to know
where you got the boundaries from.

I mention that because it seems to me you vectorized a boundary around
what looks like the urban area. However, it would be interesting to
draw the official limits adopted by IBGE

Tks.

Hey Arlete,

The problem is gartering data, I still use the old 1:100.000 maps found on http://www.zee.ma.gov.br/ map 549. This map is from the 1970's On this map it looks like all buildings belong to the village. I constructed a polygone that includes all buildings. I do this because I want streets added have as address Vila Maranhão. If you look close to Google Maps of this area you see that the Google Map is based on this extremely old data and the reason for a on usable map. They sent you over dirt roads instead of using the brand new highways, accepting 100 kms of detour and driving dirt roads. With the coming events in Brazil I want to encourage people to visit Maranhão but as Europeans drive cars they need a reliable map. I hope  people visit the old city of São Luis, Barreirinhas with one off the seven world wonders the national parc Lençóis Maranhenses and off source the ancient city of Alcântara.
Regards, Cees

I completely agree with you, pal !
Indeed, there are many maps which are out-of-date and are incomplete.
However, here in Brazil we do have some places very well mapped.
Maps are produced with precision and accuracy (with respect to
geometry, topology and semantics).
There are cartographic engineers and cartographic engineering offices
who could also contribute to map other areas where maps are outdated
or not reliable.
In my humble opinion this is the time to establish a cooperative and
collaborative taks force in order to map or update maps of this part
of the world.
GMM is doing a fantastic contribution and I am very thankful to all
the efforts, but unfortunatelly it is not enough for this huge
country.

As I have no access to this data I encourage all Brazil mappers to correct such edits. At the end we will have the best map. But saying this we must accept that the boundary issue is in most countries complicated. Also Googles philosophy thats it it not accepted to use public data on boundaries. See the discussion with Peter from Columbia on Google Waves   https://wave.google.com/wave/?pli=1#restored:wave:googlewave.com%252Fw%252B3UxODJ2QG
