Yes, you will need *-devel packages and they should be available. Have you tried `yum install libicu-devel` ?

I've installed Mapnik multipled times on fedora/rhel/centos and have always found it easiest to use the EPEL (extended packages for enterprise linux) to avoid having to source compile too many things.

You can find my fedora notes at:

Hi Dane,

Thanks! I found that my server didn't have channel RHEL Server
Optional configured.
Mapnik is working now :)

Kind regards,

Roberto

I am trying to install mapnik on rhel6 but I got an error

"Could not find required header or shared library for icuuc"

Exiting... the following required dependencies were not found:
   - xml2-config (xml2-config program | try setting XML2_CONFIG SCons option)
   - libxml2 (libxml2 library | try setting XML2_CONFIG SCons option to point to location of xml2-config program)
   - icuuc (ICU C++ library | configure with ICU_LIBS & ICU_INCLUDES or use ICU_LIB_NAME to specify custom lib name  | more info: http://site.icu-project.org/)

How do I resolve this.. ?

Do you have libxml2 and ICU development headers installed?

If you do, then the next step is to open up the config.log and look inside for clues. If it does not make sense to you feel free to post it to https://gist.github.com/, share the link, and I can take a look.

Your config.log results indicate that you are missing the boost development headers.

BTW, this recipe for amazon linux might help you for RHEL: https://gist.github.com/springmeyer/3427021
