I've noticed being here so far that the autobus routes aren't labeled in Google Maps, and neither are most stops (they're not labeled in real life either. Try finding a bus you've never taken from Sagrado Corazon... it's a nightmare)

Obviously, marking stops is important, and I've seen some added for review already around Old San Juan. The problem is, they're all named the same, and differentiating the points becomes difficult.

Back where I'm from, we mark bus stops with the name of the cross streets as the point name (we also have an announcement system on the buses that says these too, which makes it easier.. not present in PR). I propose using street crossings, or some kind of differentiation for naming bus stops.

The other problem is that I can't find an updated list of bus routes for the life of me. DTOP's online map system is completely useless in identifying which bus stops are where, and which buses go to them. There is a PDF version, but it doesn't contain some routes I've seen, like T9/22, etc. It seems outdated.

Before adding any massive edits, I just want to make sure I'm on the same page here. :)

Yeah, we need to start work on the local bus stops. I only added the M3 between Viejo San Juan and Sagrado Corazón.

We could try the naming scheme you are referring to, it is just that in the public view there is no such thing because the local transit agency is not very creative.

If you are looking for a map, your best bet is photograhing a new version at one of the bus terminals.

Actually, I'm having issues adding new stops. I keep getting:
New Bus Stop

Failed to create feature

This feature has been locked. It cannot be edited

Please correct errors and submit again or cancel

Wonder why that is? I'm testing it out on the stop across from Terminal Covadonga adjacent to Banco Popular.

This is because all transit features are locked in the US. I guess we will have to collaborate here on the forum if we want to add the bus stops.

I think we should work on a "model" for the naming schemes of the whole system. Let's work with this bus stop, next to Capitolio.

Here is an example from Orlando (street1 and street2)

I guess we could consider one of two formats for the stops:

"calle1 y calle2" or "calle1 esq calle2"\

Let me know what you think.

I'd be for using "y" between the two. It translates easier to non-spanish speakers.

Actually, now that I think about it, isn't stop street information posted on those little yellow signs under the "Parada" sign? Do they have any identifying information for the stop? I'm thinking of taking a walk today.. I'll go for a ride and find out!

Please do! It would be a great way to start.

And I stress, even though transit features are locked, I will be able to get these bus stops approved, so worry not! We just need to do some research first. Thanks for the initiative Gela!

So I stopped by some bus stops, and unfortunately the yellow signs only contain the route name and the approximate times. They don't mention if there's an official naming system for each stop.

I think we should just use the street names, or nearby prominent locations, for the stop names.

I also found that the bus numbers in use are completely different than the numbers listed on the PDF downloaded from AMA's website. Again, probably an old copy there.

How can I be helpful in this project if the features are locked?

Well, I can still submit new transit features for approval, I suppose because I am a Regional Expert Reviewer (RER). After we have all the stops with the latest, most up-to-date information, I can ask Trusted Reviewers to look at them, and hopefully approved.

I wouldn't want your passion to be undermined by a policy that locks the transit features in the US, so I wanted to help publishing these bus stops since it would be a great benefit to the local community.

We could work one route at a time, like the Viejo San Juan - Sagrado Corazón corridor. Incrementally adding stops. Since you live in San Juan, most of the hard work might fall on you.

Or — we could meet up this weekend and work on the corridor together. I don't want you to feel like you will be doing all the hard work and for me to get the "credit" since I will be submitting the features for reviewing. If we work together you might not feel this way.

I think if we meet up, we'll be able to figure out priorities better. I am free this weekend. There's a lot of little things to work on, but I agree one corridor at a time is probably best, the M3 route (and whatever other buses share that route for part of their travel.)

I know one of the big things is Sagrado Corazon's awkward arrangement of bus stops.

Actually, I'm a big fan of Google Mapmaker regional meetups. Forums are nice, but getting it all down on paper and sharing is better.

Great! It will be my first Map Maker meetup. Maybe if some other people are interested we could get more done. I have some new appointments this weekend, but hopefully I will make it to San Juan since you are free this weekend. I will confirm to you through this thread if we will be able to get together this weekend.

Can't wait!

Let me know later in the week if you know a time that would be good

We will probably meetup on Saturday. Let me know if that is good with you. I like to start work early in the morning, so whenever you think would be comfortable. I insist you give me your preferred time for us to get together and work.

One of the things that might be interesting is actually to have a meetup every once in a while and invite everyone who wants to come. I haven't seen anyone else do this kind of thing, but it might be a nice community thing to get to know eachother, and share current ideas about the region's maps!

I just wanted to make a follow up post -- our meetup went very well. Besides discovering some issues with transit options that need to be ironed out, we produced a ton of edits for Puerto Rico, including shoreline updates, new 2.5D building models, updated locations, added trails, and changed many road names to their correct name!

I hope that we can have another mapup meetup soon, maybe with more people!

Google Transit comenzarán a trabajar con Puerto Rico la semana que viene. Esperemos que finalmente se añadan todas las rutas de transportación en Puerto Rico, sino por lo menos las de San Juan.
