hi,
I was trying to convert a mapinfo tab file into shape file, which I have done many time before. But everytime I'm trying to do this now it is giving me error message and crashing mapinfo.

Any idea why MI keeps doing this?
Any help would be appreciated.

Is the tab file size to large, sometimes it happens when the file is too huge..may be split the file and convert

I hit a simliar issue yesterday, nothing to do with file size and I couldn't work it out (error message about not having a layer in my MapInfo table).

Anyway I used Ogr2ogr in the end and it worked fine on the same table (I only used MI Universal Translator as I was trying to replicate another users problem).

Are you doing a bulk conversion or just a single file?

Hey Leo

I've been having issues with Universal Translator tab to shp too - perhaps its a bit of a glitch with the latest version of MI and the UT / FME tool.

My issue is a little different to yours in that when I translate to shp the files are created with no objects - go figure!

Anyhoo - my solution is to export out the tab file out as a mif and then use UT to translate to shp. Bit fiddley but it works :)

Hi all!
What kind of tab file is it? If it is a raster file, a shape file, an excel file or maybe a wms connection, the translation will fail miserably.
But if it is a native MapInfo file, I suggest that you check if it has any indexed fields. If so, remove them and try again.
In fact, that may be why the ascii mif/mid file can be converted but not the binary tab file itself.
The library that MIUT uses has been out of sync with the various indexing schemes for international character sets that MapInfo has used over the years.
You may be aware that the Universal Translator is a crippled sibling of FME from Safe Software?
If you frequently need to do reliable format and projection conversions I suggest you check out the full FME product from www.safe.com
It has two alternative MI tab libraries to choose from. Maybe the open source one will do better.
