Hi there,

First of all, I must say I am new to GIS and particularly to MapInfo. I have downloaded the 9.5 demo version and I have some .grd files (with their corresponding .tab). I need to convert them to Arc Info GRID or at least to .map files.

I have tried to open the .grd files with ultraedit and saved them in .txt but I am not able to import them with ArcGis. Also I have opened these grids with MapInfo but I haven´t found any option for saving them to .map files.

If anyone can provide me with a method for converting the .grd files so it can be used in ArcGis it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Francesc

Francesc,

I am certainly no expert on this but as I undertand it, Mapinfo can
read a number of grid files does does not have ability to convert them
to other formats.

Fortunately, there are a number of tools available which will do what
you require.

1. Gridtools.mbx
this tool comes with Mapinfo and will convert the grd files to mig
files (mapinfo native format for grids. Its one of the tools
accessable via the tools>tool manager menu.

2. MIG toolbox
this tools was created by a third party (Tim Mashord). One of its many
functions is the ability to convert the mig files to Asc files. It is
available from www.hsgridder.com as a free download (at least it was).

you should then be able to import the Asc files into ArcGIS.

hope this helps

Thanks DaveP, but I get an error when trying to convert the grd files
to mig with Gridtools...

ERROR: Unable to convert grid file to a MIG file.

Any idea? Thanks again.

Francesc.

Francesc,

Unfortunately, no not really. Like I said, i'm no export and MI is not
that good with grid files.

My only thoughts are that your grd file is not quite the format MI is
expecting.
MI will be expecting a grd file created by vertical mapper. If your
grd was not created by vertical mapper then that could be the problem.

You might need to try a different converter. Try FME, or ArcView which
you can download as demos if you don't have them

Not much help I know, sorry. Maybe someone else can provide some
suggestions.

If they are geosoft .grd files, you can use the free plug-ins for
either Arc or Mapinfo to view with your existing GIS data. Free
download from Geosoft website.
