Hi All, I've been asked to help a client open an ArcInfo Grid file in
Mapinfo Professional. The client wants to thematically map the grid
and produce a series of maps. The ArcInfo Grid files is about 2 gig in
size. We have tried opening the file directly via file > open > select
"grid image" as file type, which opens the file, however it cannot be
thematically mapped using any colours other than "shades of grey". We
have also tried using the "grid tools" to "create mapinfo grid from
another grid file" however we get the following error message :

"ERROR: Unable to convert grid file to a MIG file."

I suspect this error relates to "file size" because we can run the
process successfully using a very small potion of the original ArcInfo
grid. We would want to avoid having to "cut up" the original grid into
many small portions.

If anyone can provide me with a method for loading or converting the
ArcInfo grid so it can be used in Mapinfo Profession it would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Richard.

Hi Richard,

The grd file can be readed by MapInfo and it is inside converted to
MIG (MapInfo Grid) format. However if there ie Vertical Mapper or
Discovery is loaded on that machine the resukt would be different.

If you can give info about the MI version and the 3D packages of that
machine I can help more.

Hi opasha

Version info:
MI 9.0
VM 3.0 + 3.1 upgrade

Note: VM only installed today, so new to the product :o)

Cheers

Hi!

A bit off topic so forgive me, but is VM really current enough to work
under Mi Pro 9.0 or later?
It seems a while since the last update was published, mid 2005 I think.
It makes you wonder about platform compatibility.

Confirmed VM to work on MI 9.0, not sure about 9.5 yet.

It's a bit out-dated but I'm still using it for simple map
calculation. VM really need a major update to keep up with similar
product from ESRI and other players.

Then try to open the GRd file from vertical Mapper. There is an option
inside VM that exports the ArcInfo GRD file to VM grid file. If this
does not work, convert the ArcInfo grd File into ASCII format then
export it into VM.

Hope this would help.

Hi All and thank-you very much for all your help. I will pass this
info onto the client. They have a version of Vertical Mapper, where as
we don't. To clarify my understanding, are people suggesting that the
client opens the ArcInfo Grid in Vertical mapper and convert it to a
VM grid. Is it then possible for the client to open the resulting VM
grid file in Mapinfo to do their thematic classification (of the VM
grid) and produce their maps ? Or are you suggesting that the client
does their thematic classification of the VM grid and produce their
maps in Vertical Mapper ?

Thanks in advance

Hi Opasha

Thanks for your post.

I'm unfamiliar with the ArcInfo data structure - so might be best if I
check that I'm trying to open the right file (or indeed that we have
been supplied the correct file format for our needs)... hope the
following makes sense...

DATA & ASSUMPTIONS
The LiDAR data we have is:
DATA
\DOCUMENTATION
\[various]
\G5M21-0607LH
\dblbnd.adf
\hdr.adf
\log
\metadata.xml
\prj.adf
\sta.adf
\w001001.adf
\w001001x.adf
\INFO
\arc0000.dat
\arc0000.nit
\arc0001.dat
\arc0001.nit
\arc.dir
\SPATIAL_DATA.gdb
\[various]
\g5m21-0607lh.aux
\g5m21-0607lh.rrd
\<name>.mxd

So, as I understand it…
•The name of the ArcInfo grid (in this case) is ‘g5m21-0607lh’
•The ArcInfo grid is composed of the directories ‘G5M21-0607LH’ &
‘INFO’ (ie. the grid is made up by the files in those two directories)
•The data needs to maintain this file structure (ie. with the
subdirectoris ‘G5M21-0607LH’ & ‘INFO’ at the same level - as their
respective files refer to each other using relative paths). NB: I've
done this.
•When trying to open/import the ArcInfo grid, we need to open the
‘G5M21-0607L/sta.adf’ file.

ATTEMPTS TO OPEN....
METHOD 1 (MI file open) & 2 (MI grid tools) - as per Richard's post

METHOD 3 (VM)
I tried to open the file using VM as follows:
MapInfo/Vertical Mapper/Create Grid/Import Grid -> [Pop up window
‘Grid Import’: Import files click on ‘Add’; navigate to ‘G5M21-0607L/
sta.adf’; Click ‘open’]

The outcome was:
“Import format not recognized”
Ie. Can’t get past this point – does not recognise file format of
‘sta.adf’ (have also tried ‘ADD’ for other files in the ‘G5M21-0607LH’
& ‘INFO’ directories, but same outcome…does not recognise any of them

QUESTIONS
1. a. Is it correct that the file we need to try to open is the
‘G5M21-0607L/sta.adf’ file? (Or... b.is there another file that we
have that we should be trying to open ...or... c.do we need to go back
to the data supplier and ask for something diff - .asc? .shp?)
2. If the sta.adf is the correct file) Do you have any ideas what I
might be doing wrong in VM?

Cheers
Rach
