I've recently upgraded to the latest version of MI and I'm trying to create layouts using the designer but I'm hitting a wall. Previously I would use layouts that were saved as workspaces as we use CAD style drawings template, and I'm trying to recreate this within MI 64.

We have got multiple workspaces set up to work across A0-A4 landscape and portrait, with the title box pre-set so that we just have to add the map window and print.

I want to be able to do something similar within the latest version, especially as we have multiple users that do the same thing but are currently using the 32bit version until they are upgraded. I need to be able to create a layout that can be saved, if possible, and used time and time again.

Can anyone help? I have attached one of the workspaces we have been using up until now to give an idea of what I want to achieve.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Same problem here. I've tried opening similar workspaces but with the dataframe gone it looks like I have to create a new layout map window everytime?

You can create template in the Layout Designer and save it as a Workspace. Then in MapInfo Pro open it using the Add Workspace menu option. However, you can't add an empty map frame on the template and change that to a new map. You need to insert a new map frame on the template.
I believe PB is looking at changing the way this works in future versions of MapInfo.

This is really the thing I hate the most of the new MapInfo. I feel like they went back, instead of improving.
I mean, it's good that you can work on the map directly from the layout, but it's really annoying and time consuming creating a new layout every time and manually adding and resizing a new map frame, especially when you have to produce several layouts for a project.
For most of my project I'm still forced to use MI 12, for this reason.

as a bodge make a blank.tab add this to your workspace

Then make a new map frame on the layout containing blank.tab

when starting a new layout project add required files to window containing blank.tab and once happy close blank.tab

its a pain but it works.

Hi All
I totally agree this is the one thing that is at fault with the 64 bit.
Having used MapInfo since 1990 and have created a million maps, would love a 1c for each map, i found this part to be very bad.
I have spent over 20 hours or more trying to create layouts for users who have no skills in Mapinfo so they can open the layout take the existing map and zoom, change a few items and print..

Is there a way to put a scalebar, North Point on the layout.  Not in a map window or am i  missing something.
In the old version you could resize edit the window and it would be reflected in the layout.  I am not adverse to the new way but!!!

I suppose i could install Mapinfo 12 on the users machines and do it that way but this is not progressive.

Again i might be missing what PB is trying to do

I while back I wrote this on the MapInfo Pro Journal group on LinkedIn. I guess it might be worth repeating

For those of you who has started working with the new Layout Designer that was introduced in MapInfo Professional 12.5 is here a heads-up:
When you add a map to the Layout Designer you actually either create a completely new map or you clone an existing map.
On both cases, the map in the Layout Designer has no relation back to the map that it was before.
With the Layout Designer you can activate an inserted map and work DIRECTLY in this map thru the Layout Designer window.

This is very different from what you have been used to with the old Layout.

I've noticed that, but I'm not sure that's a good feature at all.

It's good if you have to create only one layout from a single map, but if you are working on different maps with different elements in them, it's a complete nightmare.
You either design a new layout from scratch every time (as apparently the copy-paste commands in the layout don't work anymore - really useful to create identical layouts), or delete the map from the layout and inserting a new one (which then you have to resize again every time, lots of wasted time).

It was so quick with the old MapInfo, where you could easily change the mapper and legend shown with just a double click!

Yes it is a nightmare. I've got some very frustrated staff having to realign the map window in every layout they create. Absolutely ridiculous. QGIS is an increasingly attractive option to be honest.

Why don't you just stick with the 32-bit version, if the 64-bit is missing a feature?
Maybe it will be there when they get to 13.0, 13.5 or so.

I remember the first versions of arcgis 8, that was even missing polygons as a feature type.

QGIS also has its fair share of issues, you just don't know them yet.

I am indeed still using MapInfo 12.0, mainly because of this issue with the layout.
