I have an AutoCAD drawing which contains points and lines with 3D data. I want to extract the x,y,z coordinates of the points and convert these into an xyz grid of the sort Vertical Mapper exports. Can this be done using MapInfo?

This is how to create MIG file, for .GRD I,m using Vertical Mapper.
Try to find beta VM (VerticalMapper3.5Beta.exe - ftp://betaftp3.mapinfo.com/products/ )

0. Get tool All2Pts.mbx (All to points)
1. Convert DWG to MapInfo TAB
2. Open that TAB and convert all polylines to points with tool above.
3. Merge points and created points from polylines into one layer
4. Create Grid thematic map , define parameters
5. You have MIG grid file

Perhaps I’m doing something wrong, but when I try this my MapInfo table doesn’t contain the z values.

Did you check what you have in DWG ?
In CAD,usual way to represent contours are polylines and 3D polylines (3DPoly).
Polyline is more proper way, because you have one ELEVATION attribute for whole line (3DPoly's have also 'Elevation' attribute but it could be different for every vertex)
So first check in AutoCAD that your polys really have elevation.
If they are ok, then you should try again to import DWG but with elevation field.
Try to save your DWG as DXF and then do in MapInfo Table/Import...(type:DXF) with "Preserve Attribute Data" option checked

Hope this helps,
Nebojša

sorry!
my little mistake and correction:

When importing DXF in the same window go to OPTIONS then check "Store Elevation"
