Hi all,

Most of my maps are inserted into pdf reports and look just fine, but
i have a few clients who have final reports in Word format. The best
way ive found so far to get them a quality image, is to print the pdf,
then from acrobat pro, save as png at 300dpi.

Then in Word, insert the png image as a picture, and set text wrapping
to 'bewhind text', then enlarge the image to fill the page.

has anybody else come up with a quicker or better solution?

thanks, Adam

You could save directly to PNG format ("Save window as.....") instead of
going through PDF.

IMHO PNG gives a smaller in size with the same quality as JPEG, I use it often.

ah thanks Uffe! had no idea that was there! i shall experiment with
alternative formats over pnf. some PCs here struggle with simply
inserting an image over 1Mb in size into Word so if i can avoid jpeg
and get a good image i shall be very happy.

What about using the Drag Map Window tool and inserting your map into
Word as a MapInfo object? That is then all the linework so it isn't a
raster image.

You should never ever use JPEG with GIS. It is good for your holiday pictures, but sucks for screen dumps.

I generally use File > Save as and choose WMF, which seems to give sharper lines than the other formats available.

I just tested wmf, with the same resolution, wmf result 1,5mb and png only 51kb, for you who size didn't matter maybe wmf is a choice, but for me png still the only option. Btw IMHO wmf gives smoother lines then png. Does a graphic card matter?

Hi Adam,

I realise I am weighing into this debate quite late (I have been away), but I wanted to test this theory as I often have a similar issue.

What I would like is a MapInfo list of different ways to print (Save Window As, Print) with the respective output formats (JPG, PNG, BMP, PDF etc), any compression issues, and general file comparisons, i.e. best resolution for size.

I wanted to see if PNG was better than JPG for file size vs quality or resolution.

I print to PDF, then use the Adobe Tools > Select & Zoom > Snapshot Tool. The important thing here is the size you snapshot is the size it pastes. So I select (it tells me it has saved it to clipboard), then I hit the Zoom up to 100%+ (depending on my needs) and then select Copy (note that sometimes it doesn't like this).

Then I open Microsoft Photo Editor and Paste As New.

I originally printed to PDF using 300dpi. When I save as PNG or JPG, the resolution & quality are the same, but the PNG is 3.2 MB and the JPG is 400 KB.

I also did the same using Save Window As, first selecting PNG, then selecting JPG. Again, the output is the same, but PNG is a bigger file size.

Am I missing something? When does JPG lose more info? If I am simply pasting it into a Word doc, my money is on a JPG.

Regards

Nat

It depends what type of map you are exporting to an image. You need to decide whether to use a Lossy raster, Lossless raster, or a Vector format.

- If exporting a map made from just vector data (points, lines, polygons), it will most likely contain only solid colours. So PNG is probably most appropriate, as it will act as lossless (similar to GIF) by only storing a limited number of colours.

- If exporting a map with a raster image (such as an aerial photograph), it will likely contain thousands of colours. So JPG is probably most appropriate, as it will compress to small file size.
- Another option for vector-based maps is to export to WMF, which retains the vector data (rather than pixels) making it scalable. However the file size may be large if it contains a lot of vector information.
