Hello all,

Having some trouble....I have a region (which was kind of blocky) that
I converted to a polyline so I could smooth it. OK, that worked well;
I like the smoothed appearance and it works for what I am trying to
achieve. Now, I want to convert that smoothed polyline back to a
region so I can fill it in with color. Problem is that when MapInfo
converts it back to a region, it undoes the smoothing and it is blocky
again. Is there a way to create a region from a smoothed polyline and
maintain the smoothing?

Thanks!
Sam

Hi!

This has been covered before: anyway, the smoothing is just display. No nodes are altered or removed or added, which would be necessary to produce a true smoothed line.

I'd like to know if this trick as well.

Previously the only way I found to solve it was through two processes
in AutoCad and then bring the geometry back to Mapinfo.

All,

I was able to do it with a MapBasic program I downloaded over at
directionsmag.com (another GIS user site). I took my region, converted
it to a polyline, ran this smoothing program on it, then converted the
resulting smoothed polyline back to a region through the normal
MapInfo menu command...and IT WORKED!!!! Here is the link to the
program:

http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/163

The program has a setting for amount of smoothing and it appears that
the lowest setting of "1" is the basic smoothing that you would get if
you used the MapInfo smoothing command in its menu.

Play around with it, but it seems to work for me!

IMPORTANT
This practice destroys the original data and invalidates all metadata regarding data capture, resolution or accuracy.
It renders topologically correct region coverages useless.
See the attached image: the black pattern are the original regions, the red dotted and bordered blobs are 'smoothed' with a factor 5, using the mentioned tool.
I'm not saying it's a bad tool, just be sure to know what you are doing.
