Hello,

There are a number of topics already on how to display bearings on lines.
What I am after if something similar to the ruler function, where you click once and then you draw a line and the bearing is displayed while you move your line. Basically a ruler with a compass!

Have you seen a tool like this somewhere?

Thanks

Yes, such a thing exists. It's called RulerTool, written by Bob Edwards of the MapTools Company. It's really a demonstration in force of how to use the Windows API. If it's not on the MapTools site or you can't find it I've got a copy ...and it includes source code!

Hello Bill,

Would you be able to send the tool please?
The Maptool company doesn't exist anymore.

Thanks

Sorry this took me so long. I was out all day and to find this, I had to dig into some archives that go back into the last century!

These tools demonstrate some pretty useful procedures combining MapBasic  code with the Windows API. This was done in 1997  by Bob Edwards of the MapTools Company, and IMHO was one of the smartest people we ever had on MapInfo-L,  but then again he was a real Rocket Scientist when he worked at the Oak Ridge National Labs.

In this archive is "original" folder contains the original version of Ruler Tool with a sporty UI. Next folder is the Xmouse functions. This gets into the nitty gritty of exerting total control over the mouse right down to tracking its events such as mouse UP,  mouse DOWN,  mouse MOVE, etc -- All the low level stuff that lets you do some things you can't otherwise do in MapBasic. The Circles folder is some code I wrote based heavily on Bob's XMouse library, which is why I keep it with these other folders. It creates circles dynamically while displaying the current radius in the StatusBar display. Using the StatusBar as a display window for rapidly changing information was not a big success. the message window is a much better place for interactive display.

There's a few other MBX's in there which are just scrapplications; tests to see how certain features work in isolation. This collection of code has a lot more uses  than what you see here. I've included nearly all of it in my personal tool box, where I get good use out it regularly.

I don't know how much longer Windows will support this idea of an API but while it lasts, enjoy it!
