Ok, I can’t take it anymore… after a HDD failure of my old workhorse last year (still running XP Pro sp3), and having to switch to a box running Windows 7 Pro, I can’t for the life of me, get UltraEdit to compile using the old instructions from Bill Thoen, Peter Horsbøll Møller and Jakob Lanstorp.  Switching to Mapbasic constantly to compile is getting old!

Anyone have the same issue with Win 7 or 10 and find a solution?

Thanks,

David Reid

I'm using Mustapha Özçetin's MapBasic IDE ( version 1.7 Beta 1 ), which is pretty good, even though it's not finished. But it works for nearly everything I need, including "works in Windows 10".

The one problem with it is that I think development has stopped on it, and if so, that's it. What you get is what you get. But as it is, it doesn't destroy code you've written and it will build projects (I.e. Multi module things) using MapInfo's keystrokes, plus it has some other nice features, especially visual dialog builder. It's free as well! Why MapInfo didn't offer to buy it or at least build a #*%^$@!! editor that was worth a pile of beans, I don't know.

I’m still using UEStudio ( a special version of UltraEdit).

I just wrote an article in the MapInfo Pro Developer group on LI360 on configuring UEStudio:

https://li360.pitneybowes.com/s/group/0F9800000000QNyCAM

The PDF document form the article is attached but I haven’t attached the bat files (which might cause a lot of issues)

I hope this helps, David

Thanks Peter, looking through your attached PDF, those instructions are pretty much same as the old ones. It would seem to be an issue with Windows 7.

It still keeps throwing the error, “Error creating process267” but haven’t found anything useful as of yet, still researching. Since Windows 95, this Windows 7 for me has been the highest maintenance/problem producing OS, MS has produced, well, with the exception of ME, luckily I skipped that one.

Peter, It turns out it was an issue with location of double quotes, and while I found that, I found a discrepancy your example that may or may not affect others trying to sort his out.

Your example below did not include a final double quote at the end of the string: (I should preface this, that I am using the old DOS friendly 8 character path format “Progra~1” = “Program Files”, the default installation directory.)

"C:\Progra~1\MapInfo\Mapbasic\MapBasic.exe" -NOSPLASH -D ""%1.mb"

Messing with placement of double quotes in both the Tool configuration of UltraEdit, and the batch file, this worked for me:

"C:\Progra~1\MapInfo\Mapbasic\MapBasic.exe" -NOSPLASH -D ""%1.mb""

For anyone else who happens to be researching this issue, another minor thing that may cause you aggravation is one of the older instructions (pre win 7 & 10 days) if you’re using “Start/Wait” in your DOS batch file, that may or may not cause you problems.

Thanks again Peter!

Honestly,  MapInfo needs to buy or develop something similar to Mustafa's MapBasic IDE, I know Mustafa from his works in research Institute of Turkey and I know he doesn't have a time to develop more. MapInfo should take the leadership and create an IDE for all of us. Especially after switching to Ribbon interface it is crazy right now with pure MapBasic IDE, it is almost impossible to track everything easily even if you write in modular basis.

That's what I figured. Mustapha has put a tremendous amount of work into his MapBasic IDE  to get it where it is, and I certainly appreciate the effort. But MapInfo should be doing this. I know the budget is limited and building an IDE doesn't appear to be very high on the to-do list (there are alternatives, after all) But it would be helpful to have a standard development environment that keeps pace with new features.

Good catch, David!

I have changed it in this version of the document.

The weird thing is that is worked for me with only one quote at the end

Thanks for letting me know
