Hi again everyone - it's been a while!

For reasons I won't go into I've been out of the mix so far as mapping goes for a while - but I've now volunteered for active duty on the front line again as it were - but it's been a while!  I'm currently on version 11.5 would you believe - though we're upgrading to v2019 in the near future!

OS Topography: We get OS Topography tiled on disk, it's a bit convoluted trying to crack it open directly in MapInfo, is there something else I need to hassle our Infrastructure folks into installing?

OS Open Data, OS OpenMap Local: I've pulled a few tiles of OS OpenMap Local and District in order to fulfil a few map requests, however it's all unstyled.  I looked at doing it myself, (as OS seems to recommend) but with many layers and differently styled categories within them that's not really not very practical.  Does anyone else use these? if so how do you get the styling into MapInfo?

Thanks a lot!

DC

Hi David,

Universal translator will allow you to do small amounts of data, however it is not easy to maintain updates afterwards. There are other solutions, such as FME or GDAL but which one to use will depend on how you want to store and manage the data in the future.

A second option is to use the OS Maps API, if you are part of the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement (PSGA) you have access to this through the Data Hub. If not you would need to look at the license terms, there is limited free usage. If you are not familiar with the Data Hub details are here, where you will also find the APIS and licensing terms.

Appreciate this is the quick answer and happy to have a direct conversation to go through options in more detail, you can contact me directly on ian.b...@os.uk.

Kind Regards,

Ian

The benefit of the OS Maps API is that you don’t have to worry about styling.

Below is an example of the OS Maps Outdoor WMTS layer.

Here you can read about getting WMTS layers from Ordnance Survey loaded into MapInfo Pro.

If you also need vector data to be able to snap to an existing element for example, you can use the OS Features API to get vector features onto your map.

I'm with Peter on this. Another big plus is that using the API also means you are always using the most current version of the data. I've started embedding it into our various desktops, web maps, field tools  and other services. Once I've pointed them at the API I can essentially forget about having to run updates, etc... There are also benefits for distributed users as this is available directly over the web wherever you are. I'm essentially a one man GIS band in my local authority so love this as it makes life easier.
