A claimed new feature of MI 10 is that dynamic scale bars can be
placed in layouts. I can't get this feature to work. The scale bar
appears but doesn't seem to be dynamic. Any ideas? Also, if you
include 2 maps in a template, to which map does the scale bar refer?

H,

Use the 'Create Scale Bar" icon in the main tool box.

The trick is to place the scale bar on your map window. It is
reasonably functional and dynamic, except for those of us that don't
spell "kilometre" - "kilometer".

Cheers

Thanks. I had tried that but it leads to another problem. If the map
is included in a layout window the scale bar changes size (and
position). Another post in this group mentioned the same problem but
didn't offer or find a solution - other than making the scale bar tiny
in the map window. Have you found the same problem - and found a
solution?

Just did some playing around to replicate your issues and found that
when you change your map scale using "map scale options" by double
clicking on your layout window - yes the problems happen. If you do
your map scale changes in your map window the scale bar size (eg text
size and bar width) and location don't change. One other thing, for
the postioning of the scale bar I use one of the 4 default options
rather then the custom location option.
Good luck

Cheers

Thanks very much for looking at the problem. I played around further
as you did but I'm afraid I wasn't convinced that the behaviour of the
scale bar was consistent. I think I'll just try to avoid adding a
scale bar if possible.

If you want to add a scale bar in the layout, maybe you should try layscale made by Jacques Paris.
That's what I've been using in the last 10 years or so.
I just uploaded the mbx file on the google MapInfo-L files folder.
LAYSCALE.MBX

just drop it in your MI tools folder.

Eric

ok.. My sincere apologies for this mishap.. I turned it off.
Parts of my job requires me to ask for a receipt.
I'll just specify it case per case basis. No prob.
I wouldn't want to offend all 1776 members.

Tanks for telling me Tim.

Thanks for your help. For info, here's a message I recently received
from Pitney Bowes:
"You need to distinguish using different tools to create the Scale
Bar.

1. Old Scale Bar tool in tools section

2. Layout template toolbar

3. Scale Bar (adornment introduced with MapInfo 10)"
".... As far as I know the scale bar created with “layout template”
tool is not dynamic.

I would assume to always use adornment scale bar included in map
window to have on scale bar for each map frame in layout window. In
this context we highly recommend to update to 10.0.1 because there had
been fixed a bug with the scale in layout window."
