I’m a new poster here and a relatively new user to Mapinfo (I have
Mapinfo 9.0). So far I haven’t had any problems with Mapinfo itself,
but I am having problems with the Proviewer. The people my agency will
distribute our maps to do not have Mapinfo so they will need to use
the Proviewer to see them. I wanted to test it first however so I
installed Proviewer 9.5 on one of our vacant PC’s but I am unable to
open any workspaces I have set up. The program seems to be installed
correctly because I am able to open individual .tab files as well as
the sample maps that came with Proviewer.

When I try to open a workspace (these are simple thematic maps) that I
have saved on one our servers, I get a new dialog box prompting me to
open the .tab file that is associated with the workspace. That is
saved on my personal PC and not on the server and since I am on a
different PC, I cannot open it. I don’t think I should need to anyway
since it should all be saved within the workspace and this same
workspace opens fine on my PC through Mapinfo.

I saw in an earlier post where Greg Driver said if you have your
layers set to editable it might not open for someone else but mine do
not have that checked so I guess that’s not the problem.

I'd appreciate any help.

The .wor file is just a text file that describes the workspace (ie.
layer order, thematic maps, tables to open, etc.) and does not actually
contain any of the data, it just references the necessary files. If
these files are not accessible to the target machine (ie. over a
network, or relative file paths) then the workspace will fail. I suggest
you use the workspace packager tool which will package all of the files
necessary to put on the proviewer machine for the data to display properly.
Cheers,
Rob

Thanks Rob. I went into Tools-Tool Manager and selected Loaded and
Autoload for Workspace Packager and then I closed Mapinfo and reopened
it. Then I opened the workspace I have been using to test Proviewer
and I saved it under a different name with the new selections as a
workspace. But when I try and open it in Proviewer I get the same
problem of it still wanting to locate the .tab file. Is there
something esle I need to do?

Thanks!
Angie

To use the workspace packager-
go to tools and check loaded - it loads immediately - hit Ok
go to tools menu again - for this tool it appears at the bottom of the tools menu as a new entry - 'workspace packager'
start from there.

Hi Angie!

In your case, I would strongly recommend against using the workspace packager. I consider that a tool to use once in a while when a data set needs to be communicated along with a workspace, and cannot be delivered through a network. Using it in your case, as I understand it, would duplicate your data on each users PC, making it impossible to maintain and creating more problems than are solved.
The correct way to handle your problem is to ensure that all user have the same network access to your data as well as the workspace files. Then Proviewer can do its job.

Hi Mats!

In most cases the people I will be sending the maps too aren't on our
network so they won't have access to the files. I guess that is the
best time to use the packager and that's mostly what I would use it
for.
Thanks,
Ang
