Chances are you need to upgrade your MapInfo.

I believe that MapInfo 11 (or maybe it was 11.5) deactivated the Bing Map functionality effective Dec 31, 2013.

Bill

Sorry, but no.

But you could optionally use the GELink.mbx under the \Tools subdirectory to export your data to Google Earth and view it there.

Hi, it is quite simple. Your annual maintenance payment includes the cost of the subscription to Bing Maps (which PB pays to Microsoft on your behalf), so if you let your maintenance lapse and thus don’t have access to the annual updates to MapInfo you will then find that Bing stops working on the next 31st December.

It is a small fee to be paying for access to millions of dollars worth of imagery! It is not so long ago that you were paying maybe $2000 a time to get a Spot or other satellite image.

Regards

Tim

You need to be in maintenance to carry on using Bing.
Version 12 will expire next December 31st - by which time you should be on v12.5.

If you are in maintenance but have not installed v12.0 then contact your supplier, who can
issue a patch for your earlier version to extend Bing for another year.
I gather the Bing service does cost PBS a fair amount and the maintenance fee covers this.

Can someone please explain to me in basic terms so that I can understand this -- as I just don't get it.
I am quite obviously missing something here, but I just can not see it.

Needing to pay for Bing Maps when Google Earth aerial imagery does a way better job for free just doesn't make any sense to me.
Bing Maps aerial imagery is quite pathetic compared to Google Earth. At least it is for our area of interest...

/Dave.

Switch to QGIS and use the OpenLayers plugin.

If I am not mistaken it is very limited, what you are allowed to do with
Google Earth for free:
https://support.google.com/earth/answer/34344?hl=en

One of these not allowed activities is bringing the tiles into MapInfo.
That requires a Google Earth Pro license.

Which is also why PB can not just include access to GE for free. If you
are using QGIS/Openlayers and "Universal Maps Downloader" (UMD), you may
also easily brake the rules.

Uffe has it right. Whatever else Google may be doing, one thing that they aren't is a charity!

So basically as I understand it most commercial use of their imagery requires their $10,000 per annum licence, plus any use of their imagery e.g. on a private intranet or behind a user / password.

While they are not going to bother about a private individual nicking a few of their images, it is also true that they monitor the IP addresses of all image requests, so if you request e.g. 100,000 image views from the same IP address then expect somebody from 'big brother' to take a look at what you are doing with them!

You would not want to be building this into a system you are selling to a client, for example!!

Tim

There is no free lunch, the saying goes.
And Google maps is no exception. Unless you belong to their advertising cattle stock.
Which you avoid if you use only the maps through an api.
On the other hand, the Bing maps are not that great.
But maybe PB could gain an advantage by offering Bing maps as part of the software.
Maybe PB annoys users by tying third part licenses to their maintenance agreement?
Maybe that is bad when open source alternatives seem competitive for many users?

Just my thoughts.

Google e not trivial  to use anyway...  To use you need to go through an image reg process.. If you serious buy the imagery..  But very  good for certain  apps and first pass esp seeing only have visual and not other channels
