Hi all,

I'm having problems inserting a scale bar into a layout window using the Draw Scale Bar tool. I've done this plenty of times before without any issue and am not doing anything differently to previously.

Now, when I use the Draw Scale Bar tool Mapinfo inserts a ginormous scale bar that covers the entire layout window. I can't resize it because I can't even select the entire scale bar - it runs off the edge of the layout window frame even when I minimise the frame as far as it will go.

This is very annoying and I'm at a complete loss as to how to fix it. I know I can create a scale bar in the map window instead (this is what I've been resorting to), but I'd rather not because it just doesn't present as well.

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

I get this too. As a new MI user, the scale bar options seem extremely limited and, to be honest, crippled and ridiculous!

We do have a tab file that contains a scale bar with a pre-set width and if you set your map frame and scale bar frame manually to the same scale, then it is accurate. This is a funny little workaround though, since surely PBS could have coded up something similar years ago!

How do others do scale bars?

Try to find Layscale.mbx. it's a very good option!

More like an adequate workaround! I just tried it, and while it makes a nice enough scalebar, it isn't dynamic and changing it requires selecting all the little objects and deleting them. Undo only gets rid of the scale...

...the Draw Scale Bar tool does the same, i.e. inserts an undynamic bar in lots of little pieces.......if it actually decides to insert a non-universe-sized bar in the first place that is. If you select the whole bar and scale with the Marquee Select tool you can manage the scale bar altogether.

Sorry all,

I'm refreshing this thread in the hope of someone having an answer.

No luck with solving this problem yet.

The only way to use (very poor and limited) dynamic scale bar is to create it in the map window and link it to frame in layout. I have no idea why your scale bar is getting suddenly ridiculously big - I have tried to change units in Options / Preferences / System setttings and everything works ok. Maybe some wrong projection of Map window can affect it that way...

Anyway I am very unhappy how PB Software cares about customers in the way of making the software better. You can vote on Idea Community for flexible/dynamic scale bar which should be included as BASIC tool in Mapinfo years ago.

And also have fun reading my comments there:
