I have a customer who is using third party software called SSRS which can read in ESRI shape files.

So I used the Universal Translator to convert the polygons into a .shp file, but he couldn’t read it as it kept saying:

The spatial data type PolygonZ is not supported or this is not a valid shape file.

It is a valid shape file, though, as I can open it in ArcView 3.2 (which dates from about 2003) and in MapInfo.

If I go back to files translated by an old copy of MapInfo, though, say before 2010, then he can read them. I have just installed MapInfo 9.5 which dates from 2008 and re-translated these files for a final test, but I suspect they will work. The .shp files (for the same Tab file source) are significantly smaller when translated with MapInfo 9.5 than when using 11.5.

So has there been a change in FME and / or the Shape format, and what is ESRI PolygonZ?

Many thanks

Tim

Hi Tim,

I’ve had a similar problem when trying to load data onto a Highways Agency online asset management system. Converted files get rejected as they are 3d shapefiles rather than the accepted 2d shapefile format. Not sure exactly when this change happened, but I noticed it when I upgraded from 9.5 to 11.5. I would be interested to find out if there’s a way to create a 2d shapefile from UT in v11.5+.

Hi Tim,

Yes, later versions of MI has started adding the Z-coordinate to all SHP files.
This means the files grow in size (for no reason) and are not supported by all software reading SHP files.

It is a bug in my mind, since TAB files do not have Z-coordinates.

Tim,

If you (or your client) have the ArcGIS 3rd party extension, ET GeoWizards, you can use choose ET GeoWizards > Convert > Shape Z(M) to Shape to convert to a “regular polygon” that can be used in ArcGIS.

I use this as part of my workflow whenever I use the Universal Translator (in MapInfo) to create Shapefiles.

Bill

Hi,

My work around has been using ogr2ogr.
It will create 2D SHP files directly from TAB and do not require ArcGIS.

Thanks for that, seems to explain everything. So I just need to keep a copy of MapInfo 9.5 installed for whenever we run into this problem.

I have certainly noticed the shape files are generally at least double the size of the tab version.

Or use the new look UT in MI 12.0 - this finally exposes the FME dataset parameters, so you can choose between 2D, 2D + M and 3D + M shapefile formats when creating Shapefiles.

Cheers,

Andy

I've just had a look at the mapping file that UT generates when run from the command line (in MI 11.5). This can be edited to generate 2D output rather than the 3D default by searching and replacing:

shape_pointz with shape_point
shape_polylinez with shape_polyline
shape_polygonz with shape_polygon

This roughly halves the size of the resulting .shp files as people have mentioned.

Looking at the UT guide from the MI doc folder, there is also a command line switch that can be used to specify the type of Shapefile produced, however, this seems to make no difference when invoked (the resulting shapefiles are still 3D).

Cheers,

Andy

Andy,

I also tried that command line switch with no success. Thanks for the heads up on the mapping file though, I think that’s probably the easiest solution in my case until I get upgraded to v12.

Thanks Andy and Tim for advising that the UT command switch doesn't produce the expected 2D files.
I was going to look for that option myself, but now I know not to bother.
I am using the UI for conversions, but may look at ogr2ogr - thanks for the hint.

Hi!
For full control over tricky conversion tasks, I would recommend the unlimited FME from Safe Software. Even if the options for the limited use in UT have improved, there is still a wealth of opportunities locked away from the MI Pro user. Save yourself countless hours of guesswork and uncertainty and put yourself behind the wheel of the best Spatial ETL engine on the market. Evaluation license is available.
