Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a way to make new polygons out of a layer with polygons and a layer with lines.
I have a polygon layer of streets and a line layer that marks the sidewalk.  I now want to make polygons out of the street and out of the sidewalk.
Anyone an idea about how to do this in MapInfo?

In QGIS I used a Union operation and a the creation of multiple objects out of one to do this, but I can't find anything like this in MapInfo.
As i would like to automate the process in mapbasic, so I'm looking for a way to do this in MapInfo.

Any help will be appriciated.

Thanks a lot.

You can use the Enclose function to create closed polygons from areas that are enclosed by polylines or polygons.

You need to have all your polylines and polygons in a single table, select them and then use Enclose from the Objects menu (32 bit) or from Regions control in the Create group on the SPATIAL tab (64 bit)

Hi Peter,

thanks for your answer.  Enclosing the polygons with the lines did not give me a very good result.  Got still a lot of regions that were not formed.

When I combined the polygons to one element and did an enclose the results where better.  Then I was thinking about joining all the lines together but that does not work in MapInfo apparently.

Another thing I tried, is converting the polygons to polylines and enclosing these with the other lines.  The results in this case where much better.  No idea why?

One disadvantage of the enclose command is that you get new polygons in the area where you find the houses, in between the streets. Luckily I was able to filter these out based on there size.

Thanks again,

Lien
