HI, all:

I am currently have 4 georeferenced high resolution air photos (1 GB
each) which covered different quarter sections (NW, NE, SE, SW) of th
area I am interested. I wonder if there is a tool / method that I can
use to combine all 4 images into one and then converted to a little
bit small format (1GB or less in total size) which still keep fair
image quality.

Thanks for your feedbacks.

Hi Kevin!

Assuming all photos are correctly geo-referenced, I would open them all in a mapper, then save the mapper window to a new image file with a suitable resolution.
But expect memory problems, or  else a significant loss of resolution.

You don't say what format the images are in. If they are uncompressed tifs, compressing them to ecw would make them smaller and improve performance.
Unfortunately, the free ECW compressor is limited to smaller images and lacks the mosaicking function you need.

ERDAS Imagine can probably mosaic and compress this at the same time, but it's a heavy investment, and you won't escape the need for plenty of RAM and processor power. An alternative would of course be to buy the service from some firm that has the proper tools and equipment.

Do you have access to Photoshop CS3 or above? If so then download the
Geographic Imager plugin from www.avenza.com, open your images, click
the mosaic button and then save the new combined image. GeoImager should
automatically detect the world / tab information to located each image.

You get two weeks free use, so won't cost you anything either.

Kevin,
I'm a big fan for th FWTools\GDAL open source projects.

You could use gdal_merge to merge the files and then use
gdal_transldate to convert the image.

As Mats said you haven't mentioned the format of the current images.
ECW would give you great compression without compromising quality too
much.

Hi Kevin,

Have you also tried using the Seamless Table Manager tool - for no cost or hassle, this is really a great solution. It is not a permanent merge, but really, users generally don't know the difference.

I have a similar situation as you - I have 6 image tiles which overlap slightly and instead of opening them all, I add the new Seamless table only. I have even made the original 6 tables and their images as Hidden in Windows Explorer (START+E) so that users only see the single table.
