Hi all,

Perhaps I´ve misunderstood something relating to the new layered PDF
option in MI10, but I was under the impression that it would now be
possible to edit the different layers in Illustrator. But when I
create a layered PDF and import it into Illustrator it still only
contains one layer which is not what I (or my colleagues) hoped for..

Is it possible to change that or have I misunderstood something?

Hi Christian,

As far as I know it's not possible to export a map to Illustrator
without loosing all layers. From what I managed to find out, MapInfo has
no plans to make it possible.
The way around it is MaPublisher (add on for Illustrator) which allows
you to import GIS and CAD files.

cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I´m aware that there are thirdparty application that can do the job.
But I was under the impression, that Mapinfo would be able to produce
PDF layered maps correctly, so that wouldn´t be necessary to buy
these applications. :/

The problem is probably that Illustrator doesn't understand layered PDFs?

But again, wouldnt it be weird if PDF (which is developed by Adobe)
isnt fully incorporated in Illustrator (which is also developed by
Adobe)?

By the way we´re using Illustrator CS4.

When you open the PDF in Illustrator, make sure you select to "Open"
the PDF not "Import".

I've seen that importing a PDF into Illustrator can lose layering
info.

I have not used the PDF output, to be honest,
but I seem to recall something in the release notes
about certain limitations / situations where the output will not be
layered.
It might have to do with what happens when there are translucent
raster layers maybe?
I'd suggest reviewing the release notes, if you haven't already.

An alternate approach, to narrow down the problem:
Try creating a very simple map --- two vector layers, no
translucency.
Output that to PDF, and see whether Illustrator can read that in and
respect the layering.

Also, have you confirmed whether your version of Illustrator (recent?)
has the ability to open layered PDF and respect the individual
layers?

Hi

I´m unable to find anything in the release notes about problems with
layered PDF (besides problems with printing and viewing when themes is
based on an expression).

The maps im trying to create is only vector based (no raster) and with
very few layers (> 10)

I havent´t had the time yet to confirm wheather Illustrator CS4 is
able to handle layered PDF correctly or not, but I would be quite
surprised if it wasn´t the case. I mean, Adobe developed the PDF
format, so they should know. ;)

Off-topic, but may be of interest to some:

Specifically on layered PDF production and rendering, wrto the Adobe
Illustrator CS and the Adobe PDF Reader products: I'm told that CS versions
from 1 onwards handle layered PDFs well, but Adobe Reader versions up to 7.0
have (unspecified) problems.
I know that several non-Adobe PDF readers also have problems with PDF
layers.

Hi,

It turns out that Adobe Illustrator can handle the layered PDF
documents - at least CS4 can.
Here is how to get to the layers:

The layered PDF should just be opened in Adobe Illustrator (CS4).
At this point it only shows one layer
Now in Adobe Illustrator activate the menu in the layer window (top
right corner) and click on "Release To Layers (Sequence)"
This will "create" layers from the layered PDF.
