I am unable to translate a TAB raster file to a shp file using Universal Translator.  The UT log states that the
"TAB files referencing raster data cannot be read through the MapInfo reader. Instead, use an approriate raster reader" and also states "No specified layers were found"

I'd be grateful for any help.

Hi John!

UT cannot translate raster files, and even if, a shape file cannot contain raster data.
It's only for vector data.
However, it may be possible to use the information in the tab file to write a fitting world file.
Using that, you can open the image in ArcGIS if that is your objective.

Hi John

What are you trying to achieve? Sounds like you are trying to feed the UT a TAB file that has an associated raster file. As far as I am aware the UT is not designed to deal with raster formats or the TAB files associated with raster files that hold the projection and georeferencing info.

All you need to do to get it into Arc  is open the raster file in MapInfo and check the projection and points used for georeferencing  noting coordinate info (or read by opening TAB file with notepad) then regeoreference the raster file in Arc using that info. If you do not have Arc  and need to pass on to someone simply give them the raster file plus the data relating to projection and the points to be used for georeferencing the raster file.

Hope that helps

Mats,
Many thanks for your quick answer.  I feel a bit of a dummy! - I should have remembered what you wrote but it is a while since I last used ArcPad. All sorted now.

HTH?  Indeed it has.
Cheers and thanks,
John
