i am trying to convert a number of elevation tab files to DXF for use
by an engineering firm. The problem I am having is the the elevation
column is not converting to a "Z" value in there cad software. I am
using mapinfo 10.5 with Discover 2011. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Some old notes of mine, not sure if tested, say:
When creating DXF or DWG files, disaggregate objects first.
If you need to keep attribute data, don't use UT, do Table > Export to
DXF and tick 'Preserve attribute data'.'

And another newer note I just found.
If you want to export contours to DXF and retain z values, use ogr2ogr
- see http://woostuff.wordpress.com/2011/05/05/3d-dxf-using-ogr

Hi!
I'd like to recommend FME from Safe Software for tasks like these.
FME enables you to convert and transform all kinds of geospatial data, 2D and 3D, vectors and rasters or even lidar clouds.

No other tool gives you complete control over the whole process from reader to writer.
MIUT is FME in disguise, but very crippled. Go for the real thing. Evaluation licenses are available.

Nice! I use ogr2ogr daily but had never used the -zfield switch. GDAL
1.9 was announced today and I noticed that DWG was one of the new
drivers.

Any GIS professional that doesn't have the GDAL/ORG tools installed is
really missing the boat.

Hi there Thomas

we use a little mbx which I'm pretty sure I downloaded from the
Directions Magazine site??

cont2dxf.mbx

only trick to it is that it only takes across 1 value which must be a
numeric field.

Cheers

Kim
