I have been trying to map postcodes using excel. After getting the northings and eastings and creating points but it creates only one dot.

Please can someone help me on how to map postcodes as points map? Thanks.

Hi there, sounds like you might be using an incorrect projection or something or the coordinates might not be 100% correct. What projection are the points supposed to be in? Once you know that, open the excel in Mapinfo. Then go to 'tables' - 'Create points'.

In the window that pops up, make sure you select your Excel table from the 'create points for table:' drop down menu, then assign the projection and the easting and northing columns. Assuming the projection and coordinates are correct, the points should display properly.

Is it actually only one dot? If you use the info tool and click on the dot is there more than one record?

It’s likely that you’ve mapped the data using the wrong projection. I’m going to take a guess and assume that these are british postcodes?

If so, you just need to make the table unmappable to remove the incorrect data (Table > Maintenance > Table Structure… then untick the Table is Mappable checkbox) then click ok. Once done, go to Table  > Create Points… then click the ‘Projection’ button and select British Coordinate Systems > British National Grid [EPSG: 27700], select your Table and Easting and Northing columns as normal and click ok. Hopefully the points should now be properly geolocated!

If they’re not British postcodes the process is still the same you just need to select the correct projection for your data.
