I am trying to work out a way to dissolve the boundaries between
neighbouring polygons based on a common field.
The reason for this is that my dataset has around 500000 records of
about 40 different types, the project I’m working on groups them into
15 types which would significantly reduce the complexity of the
dataset if I could dissolve these boundaries.

I know that in ESRI ArcMap there is a function called dissolve but
can’t seem to find any similar function in MapInfo.

Has anyone got any idea of how to accomplish this?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Try Table --> Combine Objects Using Column

Then Objects --> Disaggregate

The helpfile should show you how to use each of these functions.

Yeah i tried this but my data set is far too big, so I have extracted
all my subsets and trying to do it on a subset by subset basis

thanks for the suggestion

You'll want to use Table->Combine Objects Using Column...
