I recently installed the update to v15.2.3, and MapInfo started crashing.

I've now isolated this to loading the "Basemaps for Mapinfo" mbx. (http://blog.nadnerb.co.uk/?p=125). Mapinfo crashes whenever the tool is run, or immediately on startup if the tool is autoloaded.

It's an excellent tool and I'd like to keep using it.

Does anyone else have this issue, or any ideas what's going wrong?

Hi Martin

Yeah, we have just been made aware of some problems with the 15.2.3 release.

We are working on a fix which will be another patch.

You will also have issues trying to run MapCAD on certain language versions of MapInfo Pro.

Best solution right now is not to install the 15.2.3 patch and if you have, you’ll unfortunately have to uninstall MapInfo Pro, reinstall MapInfo Pro and reapply the 15.2.2 patch.

We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Hi Martin,

If you have a look in the Basemaps for MapInfo tool’s directory there should be a folder called TABs. Can you open those tab files successfully? I think the part of the tool which is probably causing the problem is the bit that reads and writes to the XML file which loads the menu of maps. As a workaround you could try circumventing the tool and just use the tab files directly.

Thanks Peter, but this doesn't fix my problem of an extremely slow exit when I press the X to close MI Pro down. It will take up to 15 seconds to close, and while it's thinking about closing it will just sit there doing nothing , remaining unresponsive.

Hi Bill

Yeah, I can follow you a bit on this one.

I had been working with my MapInfo Pro for some days now including opening a number of tools and data.

When I hit the X, MapInfo Pro took just around 10 secs before it was closed down.

I then reopened MapInfo Pro and closed it again instantly. It was shot down after 2-3 seconds.

I opened it again, shut down all the tools and then closed it again. This time it shut down instantly

I opened it again, opened a workspace with a layout etc. and shut it down. Now it took around 3.4 secs.

I think it might be connected to the tools that you have running.

Can you check if you start MapInfo Pro, shut down all the tools and then shut down Pro again that it takes considerably less time?

Aha! Yes, it is connected to running applications. Especially the raster tool or MapCAD. When I shut down everything first, MI Pro shuts down in about a second or two. If I load the raster tool and MapCAD and then hit the X to close Mapinfo, it will take about 20 seconds or so to shut down. Some tools like universal translator don't seem to be a problem. It seems to be limited to the big ones like MapCAD and the raster tool. Other tools like universal translator and coordinate extractor, etc. don't seem to have much effect on the close time.

Do these tools share a common exit routine or are they "phoning home" or doing anything that may force them into a wait state before they shut down? Unloading them directly also shows a delay.

Anyway, it seems to be good when I don't load them, so I can use these tools when I need them and leave them unloaded for now.

Thanks,
Bill Thoen

Bill

They all have their own exit handler where they clean up their mess.

The “old” MapBasic tools didn’t have to remove themselves from the menus – MapInfo Pro would handle that and remove the buttons and menu item when a tool when shut down.

When building tools for the Ribbon you need to remove your own controls from the Ribbon.

I’m guessing this is what is taking time. That will also explain why tools like MapCAD and Raster that both have many controls take longer time than other tools.

Thanks Peter,

I'll run it without those tools loaded.  I haven't figured out yet how to run them yet anyway. It does seem strange that when I'm exiting Mapinfo pro completely that the message doesn't just dump the programs.

Oh, on second thought I guess I know why that is, but I think that it should unload faster.
