I have a few AutoCAD drawings in LT with contour lines and data. What
I want to be able to do is import these contour lines into MapInfo and
retain the associated height and gradient data so that I can create
some maps around this information.
At the moment when I import the dwg it just imports the drawing but no
associated data (all the fields and columns are blank). Is there a way
I can export DWG drawings with certain information still attached to
them such as the z-axis?
I know that the contour lines in the AutoCAD file have height
information because when I import it to Google SketchUp it creates a
3D topology easily for me.
Can anyone suggest anything to help me? Or where am i going wrong?
Thanks in advance for your help
Alan
I think you need a more capable import or conversion process.
Being strictly 2D, MapInfo cannot store more than coordinate pairs,
and any z value must be transferred as an attribute. In the case of
contour lines, all points have by definition the same z value so it
can be done.

Thats what I was thinking too that I need to have a table with Ids for
each contour line and then a field containing their associated z axis
height as an attribute. The problem is im not sure how I can assign
these autoCAD properties as a mapinfor attribute? It could be done
manually but would take forever! Also I do not have administrator
priveledges so cannot install or use foregin programs for this.
Thanks for the replies so far they have been very helpful

If I understand correct you have Autocad LT and not AutoCad Map.
Hopefully your contour lines are on separate layers in your dwgs. If not you can move them to separate layers if they have different z-value. In AutoCad use the commando QSELECT to select elevation by elevation and move the selections to different layers.

What kind of objects are contours in your drawing ?
2D Polylines or 3D Polylines ?
The best way for MapInfo is that countours are 2D polylines.
You just need an import DWG with Universal Translator from MapInfo and that's it. Elevations should be stored as attribute with no problems.
If they are 3D poly's then you should convert them to 2D poly's. You should find some VBA or LISP tools on the net that do that job for you, or find someone with AutoCAD Land Desktop or Civil3D and convert 3D polylines to 2D because these apps have special commands for that (simple AutoCAD don't).
