Where would I get world cities in .TAB format?

Here are a few of options:

GEOnet Name Server (GNS) - http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/index.html

Natural Earth Data - http://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/ - has 'populated places' at various scales.

World db of large urban areas - http://nordpil.com/go/resources/world-database-of-large-cities/

Not sure if the data will be available in .Tab format, but you shouldn't have any problems getting it into MapInfo in one format or another.

There's some pretty comprehensive datasets of world cities that ship
with mapinfo licence. Just look under your "introductory data"
directory. Files called gazmin, gazmax, and worldcaps.
