I have never seen or heard of this happening before. I've been running MIv19 for over 2 years. No software updates or changes in the past few months. Starting this week, several times I've closed a map window (clicking the x in the window) but the layers for that map remain in explorer. The only way I can get rid of it is to close all of the files and re-open them.

Has anyone ever had this happen before? Any idea on how to stop it?

Not sure what's happening, but now it's glitching so that a map shows in Explorer except I can't expand it to see the layers.

It looks like the same thing as described in this thread. In that thread it was tagged as a bug but I don't see any resolution listed. Does anyone know if this was fixed? And if so, how?

Hi Christa

That has always been the case.
Closing a Map Window or a Browser does not close the tables.
I suppose the difference is that the Explorer pane shows all open tables - which has a useful set of
functions form a right-click (shortcut) on each individual table name, like Close Table.

I appreciate the reply but that's not what I was describing. I'm not trying to close the tables. When I close a map window, Explorer still shows the map even though no window is open. Then today, Explorer will show the map but no layer control. I have no access to the layers at all. I have never had it do this before (and I've been using MapInfo since the 1990s).

I'm going to try re-installing it and see if that resets whatever happened.

Hi Christa

I have seen this a few times but not lately. I can’t recall what version of MapInfo Pro I was running when I saw this.

Just like you, I couldn’t make that map window go away.

I “fixed it” by restating MapInfo Pro.

Are you saying that the issue keeps coming back?

If you reinstall, make sure to install the latest possible version of MapInfo Pro that you have access to.

If it’s MapInfo Pro v2019, make sure to install v2019.3 that you can download here:

Hi Peter,
It did at first. Then it got worse. Now, no matter how many times I re-start mapinfo or my desktop, my layer control is completely gone. I can see the map window but there is no Map showing in Explorer under the Map section. There is a map listed under the Windows section of Explorer, but it doesn't have any layer control. And nothing shows within the Map section of Explorer so I can't do anything.

I've uninstalled and re-installed it several times and it does the same thing as soon as I open the newly installed version. I thought it may have to do with the license (I kept a backup copy on the desktop after uninstalling) because the first time I start it after an install it automatically loads all my custom apps. So I removed the license and tried to reinstall it from scratch again. It's still missing the layer control but it also still loads all my custom apps, so there must be leftover files somewhere after the original install that it's pulling/using and is retaining this error.

This is what it currently looks like when I open a map.

Oh, thank God. That worked.

I saw that option but didn't click on it as I didn't know what it did and didn't want to make it worse.

Thank you SO much!!

Hey

I’m glad it helped.

I did stumble upon this in our support database.

Apparently, the Layer List can sometimes get kicked out of size so that you just don’t see the maps and layers.

They probably are there if you had scrolled to the top but the scrollbar is only visible when you hold your mouse over the Layer List.
