I wanted to create a new line style using the Line Style Editor tool
(MILISTED) the was on the MI install CD. The software needs the
MAPINFOW.PEN file but I can not find. I am running MI 8.5. I sware I
have seen it in the MapInfo/Professional directory in earlier versions
but it does not seem to be there. Can anyone help?

Try,
C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\MapInfo\MapInfo

You can use the LocateFile$() function to find a number of MapInfo
files.
For example, in the MapBasic window you would type (w/o the quotes, of
course):
'print LocateFile$(3)'

For one copy of MapInfo I am running, I get:
C:\MapInfo\CORE\Win32\debug\MI\MAPINFOW.PEN

The values you can use with LocateFile$() are:
LOCATE_PREF_FILE 0
LOCATE_DEF_WOR 1
LOCATE_CLR_FILE 2
LOCATE_PEN_FILE 3
LOCATE_FNT_FILE 4
LOCATE_ABB_FILE 5
LOCATE_PRJ_FILE 6
LOCATE_MNU_FILE 7
LOCATE_CUSTSYMB_DIR 8
LOCATE_THMTMPLT_DIR 9
LOCATE_GRAPH_DIR 10
LOCATE_WMS_SERVERLIST 11
LOCATE_WFS_SERVERLIST 12
LOCATE_GEOCODE_SERVERLIST 13
LOCATE_ROUTING_SERVERLIST 14
LOCATE_LAYOUT_TEMPLATE_DIR 15

DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A BACKUP OF THAT ORIGINAL FILE!!! :)

Something else to remember, any other machine you send your tables to,
tables which have any custom line style, that machine will need your *.pen
file to see that line style or it could really muck things up.

Same goes for your *.fnt file if you make any of your own custom symbols.

***This includes any machines you have Mapinfo Pro Viewer installed on.
You'll need to copy your *.pen and or *.fnt file to those machine's as well.

Hope this helps

How come MapInfo has litteraly thousands of possible symbols, yet
less than two hundred linestyles?

If the maximum number of linestyles was increased, we could donate
our custom linestyles to mapinfo for inclusion in the next release,
and then we wouldn't have to exchange .pen files any more.
