Does anyone know of any good websites to download custom map symbols?
I haven't had time to learn MapBasic yet, and would like to add some
symbols to my default symbol set.

Thanks,

Frank

There's a MapServer Symbol Exchange page for TrueType symbols at
http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/docs/howto/symbologyexchange_ttf. Even
though this is aimed at MapServer users, you can also use TrueTypes in
MapInfo, no problem.

Root a bit deeper to find the link that Bill mentioned. (It's in his
posting couched in that Web site.)
You'll go to this URL,
http://umn.mapserver.ch/index_en.php

. . . which should give you a split screen. Scroll down on the left for
Symbols and keep drilling in. Preview screens for the five or six symbol
packages are anchored, as are automatic download anchors for the different
symbol sets.

Hi Bill/David et al

I am always interested in discussions about Font libraries and eagerly
visited this site to see what was available. I duly downloaded the
seven TTF files referenced and tried to "Install New Font" them in my
Fonts directory. The files looked exactly like the others I have
downloaded from the excellent font library of Jacques Paris (at
http://www.paris-pc-gis.com/ then use Search facility on word "font"),
however I cannot get them to load. I passed the job to my IT support
person assuming that I didn't have sufficient privileges on the
computer at my "new" workplace. But he has also had problems.
Bill is there any chance that you could give me an alternate source of
these font libraries from which to download them - I have printed out
the preview pages and they are too good a resource to pass by for lack
of trying!

Thanks

I've noticed that there are a couple of types of TrueType font symbols out there and at least one of those types doesn't work with MapInfo. I haven't tried these symbols myself in MapInfo, but it could be that these are the wrong type. Perhaps someone who knows more about fonts can fill us in.

I too had downloaded this some time ago and found that, as I recall, some or all are not formatted correctly. That is, for a font to work in Mapinfo, their "Character set" must be "Symbol", to which these fonts are not.

This is according to FontLab's  Type Tool application which reports these "symbols" as text or characters only.

Additionally, I found that regardless of not working in Mapinfo, they will not install to the font folder, as if the file(s) were corrupt.

Testing using the "animals.ttf" file which I renamed to animalsTST.ttf so as not to interfere with other similarly named fonts I have. (Bare in mind, to change the font name, you cannot simply rename the font file!)

When I re-"generate" or compile the font "animalsTST.ttf", they install under WinXP just fine.

Likewise when I change the font's "Character Set type" entry to "symbol" and re-generate, re-install, Mapinfo can now see and use the font animalsTST.ttf.

Hope this helps

I always use the "Font Creator Program" to switch the font to type
"symbol". Costs a few bucks but the only one I've seen so far doing a
decent job ...
