A client of mine is trying to setup live GPS tracking in MapInfo using a Garmin GPSMap 62s and Blue Marble’s Geographic Tracker software.

For some reason he can browse the files on the GPS through Windows Explorer but the Blue Marble software can’t recognise the GPS device.

He has tried all the different USB/COM settings in Geographic Tracker without luck. When he attempts to activate the device he get the following:

Description: cid:image001.jpg@01CD95BE.7DEB9B50

OR

Description: cid:image002.jpg@01CD95BE.7DEB9B50

He has the Garmin GPS connected to his laptop by USB.

Does anyone have a possible solution?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,
Try the followig steps and see if it can help:
  • uninstall all the GPS and Marble Geographic Tracker software
  • install first the Garmin GPS with its USB (NB: the USB cable is also a device which should have drivers and should be installed)
  • remove the Garmin GPS before installing the Marble Heographic Tracker
  • n the settings of the Marble Geo Tracker Application check if the you can locat the model of the GPS you have already installed and choose it as its GPS
  • Insert the Garmin GPS and see if it works
Good luck

a quick review of the owners manual does not show Nema support, i do not think it will output NEMA information to the computer.

you can check it by using a terminal program and checking the USB port

i was wrong it looks like it does "High-speed USB interface and NMEA 0183" you need to turn this option on in the GPS

I have used a Garmin 60csx with Mapinfo and Geotracker via a USB cable.  I used the "Garmin" protocol to connect it but you also have to have this selected on the GPS as well.  The connection worked OK but there was a very annoying 20 second lag between me moving and the spot on the screen starting to move.  It would be better to get a GPS with a blue tooth connection.  In addition don't set the polling to the GPS too high or it runs your battery out very quickly.
