I have been using MapInfo to create printed maps.  It's been hanging alot.  I tried rebooting my machine and now, I get a message upon opening MI stating that it has to be activated.  If I try to connect to their activation server, it won't let me and just tells me there is an error (but won't tell me what that error is).

I can try to reinstall it, which I've done in the past, but then, I've been able to get the licence information from the software.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  We do not have any paid support with PB.

Thanks.

Run "System Restore" to take your system files back to the 'checkpoint' just previous to when the problem started.
You will just lose any of this weeks Windows Updates and if you have recent program installs they may need reinstalling.

I ran into the same thing a couple years ago on a client's computer and if my memory serves me uninstalling and reinstalling fixed it. When you unisntall you can't "return" the license to MapINfo's license server. It will fail. I can not remember if I had to re-authorize MapInfo after I reinstalled it or not. Kind of frustrating but with a little work you will probably get it back. Ross's suggestion is good also, maybe better than mine.

Good luck,
Rich

It would be beneficial  if Pro automatically saved ones license info into a protected/scrambled/secret file - in say the folder C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional, and let you reactivate your license using that file after a reinstallation.

The saved info could easily be bound to your Windows instance (product key) to prevent spawning multiple activations, and it could be backed up (and restored) without needing Pro up and running.

But of course we're all always online with the PB license server, and Pro never crashes or fails to start, right ? ;-)

Kind regards / Med venlig hilsen

Ah, you are right.  Actually, since using 10, I've been asked upon re-installation (yes, when I installed it on my new machine with Windows 7), it asked about transferring my license for installation on another machine or keeping it in a temporary cloud for re-installation on my machine.  I've never seen that before and I started with MI 8.  My colleagues have gotten new machines and now, our former licenses are somewhere never to be seen again.

I did try to install the trial of MI 11, but that told me it would have to uninstall 10.  I don't understand why the siblings can't live together on the same cpu.

Hello

I am running 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 on my machine at present with no apparent problem (windows 7, 64bit). Admittedly I have only had this machine for a few days but I was previously running them all on XP. They installed quite happily ( into separate folders).

Hi,

You can have as many different editions of MapInfo as you like on your PC, BUT only if you install them to different folders, e.g. C:/program files/mapinfo/version11 etc. Which means you must change the default location when you are doing the install. If you leave it on the default then Mapinfo will uninstall your previous edition since you can't have two in the same folder.

Activation / deactivation is quite simple usually. You must keep a note of your keycode and account number. See Help: About Mapinfo or the label on your box. You deactivate on an old pc by uninstalling Mapinfo. First thing it asks you is about returning your licence to the PB server. Then just install on your new pc and use your keycode and account number to get the licence back.

If you have a disaster such as the pc breaks, then you can call PB and explain. If they believe you they can reset the licence server at their end.

You don't need any connection to pb other than during activation / deactivation.

One thing I know of which will prevent activation is if your clock is wrong by more than a fewinutes. If you are days out their server assumes you are trying to trick it.

Tim
