Hello,

Is there any user of Map Info Professional 7.8, that can assist me to
mapping an excell file using easting and northing to create geographic
points?

Hi,

Basically the process is - Open the spreadsheet in MapInfo - File ->
Open and set the 'file of type' to .xls. If your excel spreadsheet has
column headings then check the 'Use Row Above Selected Range for Column
titles' tick-box on the Excel Information dialog box and these will be
used in the new table. In the next dialog (Set Field properties) make
sure that the columns containing the x and y values are set as type
'float'. Your spreadsheet should now be open in a Browser window.

To create points go Table -> Create Points and select the appropriate
table and the columns that hold the x and y values. You also need to
select the appropriate projection so that the points will be created in
the correct place! If you open a map window for the table, the points
should be displayed.

If any of the x & y values are missing then make sure these are set to 0
rather than blank/null values in the excel spreadsheet or else you won't
be able to create points.

Greg's instructions are thorough. The one place where I've watch new field
hands stumble is in calling the X and the Y.
The eastings are the X. They are values that increase in value to the east
(along the X axis, so to speak).
The northings are the Y. They increase to the north.
