Hello

I have been provided with an ASCII file with spatial data. However
when I open it as an ASCII file in MapInfo, the header file sits
loosely in the table and is not attributed to each column. It has
been suggested that I use the univeral translator in MapInfo, however
the PDF on the translator says that it can only be used for certain
formats (eg. AutoCAD DWG, ESRI shapefiles etc).

Can anyone assist please? I can forward the ASCII header info from
the data provider if that helps.

Many thanks

Are you opening the ASCII file in MapInfo using the ""FILE OPEN" set
files of type to ASCII"" process ?
If so, that should be asking you if you want to use the first line as
headers.
Also when you mention an ASCII file with spatial data, do you mean X and
Y coords as column information ?
I was under the impression that an ASCII file could not hold the spatial
element.
When all else fails and I am having trouble with an ASCII file, I put it
into Excel and bring it into MapInfo that way.
This also gives you the chance to examine the file and see if it
contains anything out of the ordinary.
Hope this helps.

Hi Darren!

From the information you give I suspect that this is a raster, or grid file.
These can be of different formats but many have a standard header,
defining certain parameters of the file, whereas the rest is only
data, or location + data.
The UI cannot translate grid files, but FME can.

In cases like this, metadata becomes useful. I suggest you get back to
the data provider to get information on the file format and its
contents.
