I have a raster image (aerial photo) that I want to clip to the extent
of some polygons, which are defined in a separate vector format .TAB
file.

How can I do this in MapInfo? Do I need an add-on tool or something?

Thanks

Hi Carl!

Have you tried the clipping tool in MapInfo?
That should do the trick, at least if you are concerned only with the display or printed output.
On the other hand, if you need to physically crop the raster images on file, you will need some image editing tool.
Try to export a simple map image of the clip polygons the same size as the image, and use that as a tracing layer to cut out the areas from the image.
You can either erase everything else from the image, retaining its pixel size in which case you need not re-register it, or cut out the piece as a new image in which case you must georeference it as a new raster file. You will also have to deal with areas outside your polygon but within the necessary rectangular bounds of any image file. The transparency option in the raster file display setup will be a good hint to start with.

I have tried clipping, but I think that only changes it on the
display. I actually need to cut those parts out of the imagery - a
client would like to purchase a small area of imagery, and I don't
want to supply the whole file which covers a very large area. I know
how to do it in ArcGIS - surely there's a way in MapInfo?

Carl,

You can clip your image on screen and then save the image as a
Geotiff.
This maintains the cropped view and still keeps the geo-referencing in
the associated tab file
Hope this helps

Saving the image in MapInfo will probably degrade the image
significantly, since you will need to be zoomed out and viewing the
entire image when you save the window. If your area of interest is
very small you might be able to increase the output resolution and get
something suitable.

MapInfo isn't optimal for raster operations. It's only just catching
up on viewing options (reprojection etc), but pretty much can't do any
real processing. Programs like Global Mapper are required for these
raster tasks.

You could always use the free ER Viewer from ER Mapper - use Save as after zooming to your required area. (Not sure if the new owners still make it available.)

Hi all
I am having problems creating a mappable .tab using SQL Server 2008 Spatial in MapInfo.

System configuration
MapInfo 9.5.1
Easyloader 9.5.1
SQL Server 2008

I am trying to integrate MapInfo with SQL spatial
Using easy loader 9.5.1 I can export a .tab file into SQL (confirmed the spatial component is working correctly)
The map catalogue file is populated and a .tab file has been created
When opening this tab file in MapInfo it contains all data fields but is not mappable.
I have tried the "Make DBMS table Mappable" feature but this doesn't have any reference to spatial columns, it is still looking for X Y Coordinates.

Can you advise me on how to create a mappable tab file created from SQL Server 2008?

Kind regards

With MapInfo 9.5 you'll have to use File > Open Universal Data to access mappable tables from SQL Server 2008.
Direct read/write of this format (as you do with Oracle and SpatialWare) is not supported.
