Dear Friends,

I am relatively new to MapInfo and need to digitze quite a number of
Scanned Maps using MapInfo v9.5.
I'll really, really appreciate if someone kindly gives me a step by
step guide on how to successfully do this using MapInfo v9.5?
I desperately need a tutorial....
Thanks in advance
Regards
Victor

You need to register your scanned image. 1. Find out what projection
your scanned map is based on and identify few points or features or
grid points, on the scanned image to be your control points.
2. File -> open (file type = select raster)
3. Choose Register in next dialogue.
4. Select projection based on projection used on your scanned map.
5. Identify your control points by zooming in or out and click to add
the xy coordinates. If you can identify the coordinates of your
control points on your scanned map, that's the coordinates you will
require to add when you are adding your points. Its best to to zoom in
to a lower scale to add a point. You must add more than 4 points and
try to achieve lowest error as possible.
6. Click ok and you should have a window open with nothing to show. Go
to your layer contol and select your image layer and disable zoom
range. You should be able to view your image.
7. Start digitizing by enabling your cosmetic layer in your layer control.
8. After digitizing few lines, go to map menu and save cosmetic layer.
Your digitized lines or points should be saved on to a new table and
layer. You will also be able to see the layer added in your layer
control.
8. Select or tick your new layer edit box and continue digitizing.

Hope that helps.

Victor,
There are three fundamental topics for digitizing:  (1)  choosing between onscreen or other methods, (2) getting the maps georegistered in appropriate projection and datum, and (3) tips for proceeding with the digitization.  Matt(?) Temar gave good directions for getting basemaps registered and onscreen.

Onscreen digitizing by tablet
A while back, Bill Thoen had a good summary of digitizing using a tablet as an extension of the computer's mouse.  This is an onscreen digitizing method that works directly in MapInfo.  Bill used the Wacom tablet, and I concur with all of his advice.  If you are going to digitize several maps or if you will find yourself digitizing sporadically in the months and years ahead, then seriously consider getting a tablet.  I use a 9x12 Wacom and have been using it with PC and Mac since Mapinfo v. 4.

Here's how to get back to Bill's comments, vintage 2000, I think.  The search string is digitiser mapinfo (yes, spelling with "ess").
http://www.mail-archive.com/mapi...@lists.directionsmag.com/msg26310.html

Although you can "touch down" with the Wacom tablet to set your points, I find it even smoother to hold the digitizing pen a few millimeters above the tablet.  The onscreen cursor is still working through the pen at such a distance.  I trace smoothly with the pen but drop my nodes with the conventional mouse.  Said another way, the tracing tool is in continuous motion, never touching down.  Node placement occurs as my other hand hits the button on the usual mouse.  If my mouse finger begins to annoy me with repetitive motion soreness, I may choose to digitize using a laptop, which uses a slightly different motion to toggle the mouse.

Peter Horsboll-Moller reminded us, at about the time of Bill's summary, that the Mapinfo Autonode feature automatically drops nodes when tracing over a raster image.  You set the pixel spacing between nodes thus:
Autonode (Options-->Preferences-->MapWindow, then set the autonode “tolerance” (pixel gap).  Default is 10.

I've never been too great a fan of autonode for digitizing because node spacing (for me) is a matter of line curvature--fewer nodes along straighter segments, more on the tight curves.  Nonetheless, autonode is a handy tool to keep in mind.

Tips for digitization?
A round of ideas on digitizing appeared recently, under the theme "sporadic drift of lines."  I've attached a word doc (well,  . . . rtf) with my summary of notes from that thread.  You'll find some advice on "best practices" in the opening paragraphs.
