Hi,

I want to create watershed boundaries and stream paths from an
elevation grid. Does anyone know

a) how to do this in MI 9.5 /engage3D
b) if there's a good/cheap utility out there that will do the same
thing?

It looks like ArcGIS has the tools, but I don't have this... any other
suggestions?

thanks

- Mick

I have seen this one mentioned before:
http://www.avantra.com.au/StreamBuilder.htm

I'm sure even ArcGIS requires an extension to do the same.

Streambuilder looks like it does exactly what I want and I haven't
come across that before - good suggestion. I didn't particular want to
fork out more money at this stage, so was hoping there might be
something out there that was less elegant but at the right price. Is
there actually a way to do it in mapinfo/engage?

Thanks

If you have a bit of time to invest, you could consider GRASS GIS - the
relevant raster processing commands are documented here (amongst many
others):

Grass is great,

If you download the latest windows  version of QGIS it has GRASS tools embedded, if you download the GRASS plug-in, which makes life easier. I have used this for various tasks that make Arc and Mapinfo fall over.

Another one to consider is SAGA GIS which seems to have many hydrology and watershed tools.

On the subject of general Open source GIS, I'd strongly recommend people take a look at Kosmo. The most robust one we have tried so far. Also another that works very well with PostGIS.

Cheers

Mick,

I haven't used it do this but Grid Analyser can do watershed analysis,
and it free!! It can also import ASCII grids, so you might be able to
use it to create your DEMS's, though I'm not sure if it'll batch
processing.

You can download Grid Analyser from the MapInfo-L Google home page (I'd
provide a link but it's blocked at work!).

Mick,

We experimented with manifold for a bit, and it has some quite good
functionality as well as some limitations. One of its strengths looks like
its grid analysis, although we didn't use it much. It is a bit hard to
adapt to their way of doing things. Its quite a low cost option and will
import and export MapInfo Tab files. MapInfo's support of Shape files
probably allows you to work with the Open Source options more easily as they
tend to use it as their standard vector format.

This is a MapInfo extension; I haven't used it (though tested it some
time ago). Martin Higham was behind the development of Discover
years ago. I'll bet this is just what you need, assuming it is up to
date with MI's current version.

So it looks like there's quite a few options out there, I wasn't
expecting such a varied response

Streambuilder has a limited us trial for download, so I will try that
and compare with the others.
Of the other options, it'll take a bit of time to explore them all,
but GRASS certainly looks the part.

thanks everyone for your replies.
