Hi there

We have recently started having issues with Mapinfo being slow to startup.  We currently run v12.02 but this has also been happening with 12.01.

Running a process exlorer app, it shows that Mapinfo is accessing SPLWOW64.exe as it is starting so not sure if that is part of the problem.

Has anybody else come across this issue or knows how to stop this delay?  This is happening on 3 machines all running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Thanks.

Nick

HI Nick,

I’ve observed exactly the same thing on my MI 12.00 and 12.02 patch running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

It seems to have started about a month ago, probably due to a Microsoft update of some sort.

Regards,

Bill

Sounds like MI Pro is looking for a printer that might have been removed or renamed?

Can you check if
- your workspaces are pointing at a printer that no longer exists
- the preferences are pointing at a printer that no longer exists

Thanks for the reply

These are 3 stand alone machines that have never been connected to a printer.

We have tried changing some of the settings such as Windows Default and Mapinfo preferred in the Mapinfo printer preference to see if that makes a different but the same delay at start up happens. The only thing we have are virtual printers like Mapinfo PDF, Microsoft XPS and Onenote.

Regards.

What do you call slow? As an example, on my Windows Ultimate 64-Bit machine, with 6 gig of ram and tons of other processes running, starting up 12.02 takes 5 seconds until the Quick start dialog finishes display. Changing my MapInfo printer to the PDF or XPS makes no difference in the startup speed. The "splash screen" dialog displays after 1 second although repeated startups will increase in speed (Windows caching). So an older macine that is only occassionally used took longer the first time but about the same the second.

This is all local file access with no network drives involved.

I timed it this morning and it took 1 min 10 seconds from double clicking the Mapinfo icon on desktop to the user interface becoming available. During that time the Mapinfo window is just solid white.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing a few times but the problem persists.

Nick

I timed it on my computer.
MI Pro 12.0.2 takes 4 seconds on Windows 8 64-bit (from a small SSD which gives a large speed boost).

Hi.

I was seeing similar problems (although not just since v12 - I had similar with v11.5 but not as bad). I believe it was something to do with permissions and the user profile, as MapInfo couldn't access some of the custom symbols files. Tech support ran a remote session, sorted it out with by doing something with the registry to delete my MapInfo profile in my user account, and once re-started it found all the files and started in about 15 seconds. Much much quicker.

Would like to see 4 seconds though!

I couldn't say exactly what the support team did, but I do think it was to do with inacessible files that MapInfo was "looking for"

Hi,

Did anyone find a fix for this?

I'm running v12.02 on Win 7 x64, i5 with 4GB of RAM and it takes over a minute and a half to start. I've tried re-installing and removing all MI settings from my profile and registry so there shouldn't be any refererences to old printers (unless for some reason SPLWOW64.exe is trying to enumerate all printers that have ever been connected to my laptop).

Thanks
Tom

From you description is sounds as if MI Pro is asking the system for printer information.

Could try some of the following suggestions and see if any of it will help:

- Try setting a different Windows Default Printer
- Try setting a different default printer in MapInfo Pro, that is not the Windows Default printer

Are you opening workspace when MI Pro is starting?

wkaibigan,

I have also noticed that MapInfo is slower to start up.  I am currently running MapInfo 12.0.3  RB 304 and Discover 2013.0.3  RB 15.0.3.304 and noticed this problem from at least the version previous to this.

My computer runs Windows 7 64-bit and has a SSD drive with Centrino 2 vPro processor.  The start-up takes 38 seconds.

Not sure I want to trouble the helpdesk with this problem, even though I'm still paying for that privilege!  They seem to be struggling with more urgent ones at the moment.

Regards,

Jonathan.

Hi Jonathan

If you close MapInfo and then start it again, is the second time quicker?
Or still 30+ seconds

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your help.

No, there is no workspace opening when I start MapInfo.  I have never used that option.

I assume you make the change via Options > Preferences > Printer.

It is currently set to the Windows default printer but My computer is not and is rarely ever connected directly to any printer.

With this in mine I changed it to 'MapInfo PDF printer version 12.0' to get around this problem and now it takes 33 seconds to start-up.  A very slight improvement over the 38 seconds previously.

Very kind regards,

Jonathan Cordery

JC,

We had a similar issue on 11 and forwards and never really go to the bottom of it to my satisfaction.  I think it had something to do with licensing and corrected it by doing a complete uninstall (return the license) and reinstall.

It’s a pain but that is the only way I ever overcame the issue.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Can you try changing your Windows default printer, too?
Just try setting it to a different one than the one you have specified as your default within MapInfo Professional

Hi Peter,

Actually I got that wrong, it is still 38 seconds to open MapInfo.  It hasn't changed.

Excel & Access take less than 1 second to open by comparison.

Jonathan,

Thinking along the same sort of thing....
...Based on the theory that MI might be timing out on trying to read a
network drive. Sounds dumb I know,

Reboot computer. Jump into Windows Explorer and look at the contents of
each of your mappable network drives - thus forcing a connection to each
of them.
Run MI and see if still slow.
Write down all of your connections, remove all network drives, and try
running it again to see if it is still slow.

At least this will disprove it has anything to do with your network or
network connections.
